House of Representatives A RESOLUTION1 To recognize Wednesday, May 26, 2010, as "Delgado Community College Day" at the2 Louisiana House of Representatives.3 WHEREAS, Delgado Community College is a comprehensive, multicampus public4 community college with strong pre-baccalaureate programs, as well as occupational and5 technical programs, fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern6 Association for Colleges and Schools to offer associate degrees; and7 WHEREAS, in 1921, the Isaac Delgado Central Trades School, built on a fifty-seven8 acre site adjacent to New Orleans City Park and named after the New Orleans businessman9 and philanthropist who donated funds for the school, opened its doors for vocational10 education in the metal and woodworking trades; and11 WHEREAS, over the past eighty-nine years of success, Delgado Community College12 has expanded its role, mission, curricula, location, and student body and is Louisiana's13 largest and oldest community college; and14 WHEREAS, in recognition of the diverse needs of the individual and the demands15 of a democratic society, Delgado Community College provides a comprehensive educational16 program which helps students clarify values and develop skills in critical thinking, self-17 expression, communication, decision making, and problem solving; and 18 WHEREAS, in addition to providing opportunities for students to prepare for19 continued higher education at four-year institutions, Delgado Community College also offers20 skills training for students to enter the workforce immediately through a variety of degree21 HLS 10RS-4881 ORIGINAL HR NO. 117 Page 2 of 3 and certificate programs, specialized onsite training, and custom-designed courses of study;1 and2 WHEREAS, Delgado Community College provides numerous courses of study from3 a variety of areas, such as allied health, arts and humanities, business, communication,4 nursing, science and mathematics, and technology; and5 WHEREAS, Delgado Community College maintains the City Park Campus, the West6 Bank Campus, the Charity School of Nursing, Delgado Northshore in Covington and7 Delgado Northshore in Slidell, and the Kenner/East Jefferson Office of Delgado and a8 Maritime, Fire, and Industrial Training Facility; and 9 WHEREAS, in pursuing its mission in higher education, Delgado Community10 College is committed to excellence in academic instruction by providing a qualified and11 caring faculty, a supportive administration and staff, programs that meet the highest12 standards, and an environment that supports a high level of performance in faculty, staff, and13 students; and 14 WHEREAS, through its open-door admissions policy and affordable access, Delgado15 Community College commits itself to providing opportunities for higher education to16 students from around Louisiana, the nation, and the world with diverse racial, ethnic,17 religious, economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds; and 18 WHEREAS, in recent years, Delgado Community College has expanded its online19 education program to offer courses to those who may not have otherwise pursued higher20 education; and21 WHEREAS, the historical record of Delgado Community College demonstrates that22 Delgado respects and values the worth of each individual; learning and the pursuit of23 knowledge; open communication; the cultural diversity of students, faculty, staff, and24 administration; and an understanding of responsibility to our nation and our world; and25 WHEREAS, having demonstrated notable achievement in educating more than one26 hundred thousand students, Delgado Community College rightly celebrates eighty-nine years27 of "education that works", and it is appropriate to recognize Wednesday, May 26, 2010, as28 "Delgado Community College Day" at the Louisiana House of Representatives in honor of29 the pride that Delgado Community College has brought to the state.30 HLS 10RS-4881 ORIGINAL HR NO. 117 Page 3 of 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the1 Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, May 26, 2010, as "Delgado2 Community College Day" at the Louisiana House of Representatives.3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted4 to Chancellor Ron D.
