HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 117
BY REPRESENTATIVES HUTTER AND LOPINTO
A RESOLUTION
To recognize Wednesday, May 26, 2010, as "Delgado Community College Day" at the
Louisiana House of Representatives.
WHEREAS, Delgado Community College is a comprehensive, multicampus public
community college with strong pre-baccalaureate programs, as well as occupational and
technical programs, fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association for Colleges and Schools to offer associate degrees; and
WHEREAS, in 1921, the Isaac Delgado Central Trades School, built on a fifty-seven
acre site adjacent to New Orleans City Park and named after the New Orleans businessman
and philanthropist who donated funds for the school, opened its doors for vocational
education in the metal and woodworking trades; and
WHEREAS, over the past eighty- nine years of success, Delgado Community College
has expanded its role, mission, curricula, location, and student body and is Louisiana's
largest and oldest community college; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the diverse needs of the individual and the demands
of a democratic society, Delgado Community College provides a comprehensive educational
program which helps students clarify values and develop skills in critical thinking, self-
expression, communication, decision making, and problem solving; and 
WHEREAS, in addition to providing opportunities for students to prepare for
continued higher education at four-ye ar institutions, Delgado Community College also offers
skills training for students to enter the workforce immediately through a variety of degree
and certificate programs, specialized onsite training, and custom-designed courses of study;

WHEREAS, Delgado Community College provides numerous courses of study from
a variety of areas, such as allied health, arts and humanities, business, communication,
nursing, science and mathematics, and technology; and
WHEREAS, Delgado Community College maintains the City Park Campus, the West
Bank Campus, the Charity School of Nursing, Delgado Northshore in Covington and
Delgado Northshore in Slidell, and the Kenner/East Jefferson Office of Delgado and a
Maritime, Fire, and Industrial Training Facility; and 
WHEREAS, in pursuing its mission in higher education, Delgado Community
College is committed to excellence in academic instruction by providing a qualified and
caring faculty, a supportive administration and staff, programs that meet the highest
standards, and an environment that supports a high level of performance in faculty, staff, and
students; and 
WHEREAS, through its open-door admissions policy and affordable access, Delgado
Community College commits itself to providing opportunities for higher education to
students from around Louisiana, the nation, and the world with diverse racial, ethnic,
religious, economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds; and 
WHEREAS, in recent years, Delgado Community College has expanded its online
education program to offer courses to those who may not have otherwise pursued higher
education; and
WHEREAS, the historical record of Delgado Community College demonstrates that
Delgado respects and values the worth of each individual; learning and the pursuit of
knowledge; open communication; the cultural diversity of students, faculty, staff, and
administration; and an understanding of responsibility to our nation and our world; and
WHEREAS, having demonstrated notable achievement in educating more than one
hundred thousand students, Delgado Community College rightly celebrates eighty-nine years
of "education that works", and it is appropriate to recognize Wednesday, May 26, 2010, as
"Delgado Community College Day" at the Louisiana House of Representatives in honor of
the pride that Delgado Community College has brought to the state.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, May 26, 2010, as "Delgado
Community College Day" at the Louisiana House of Representatives. ENROLLEDHR NO. 117

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
