HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 191
BY REPRESENTATIVES ROY, CHANDLER, DIXON, ELLINGTON, HAZEL, AND
JOHNSON
A RESOLUTION
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Bishop Gerald Archie "G.A."
Mangun of Alexandria.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Bishop Gerald Archie
"G.A." Mangun of Alexandria on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the age of ninety-one; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun was the longtime pastor of The Pentecostals of
Alexandria and a beloved spiritual leader in the community for sixty years; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun helped build the church's congregation from fewer than
forty members when he arrived in Alexandria in 1950 to approximately four thousand
members at the time of his death; and
WHEREAS, born March 11, 1919, in LaPaz, Indiana, Bishop Mangun was ordained
a minister in 1942 and was elected pastor of the then First United Pentecostal Church in
1950 by thirty-five members, and the church, now The Pentecostals, seats thousands today
and is full for Sunday services; and
WHEREAS, for fifty-six years, Bishop Mangun served as the Presbyter over the
United Pentecostal Churches in the Louisiana District's Section 7, composed of
approximately thirty-five churches in central Louisiana, and his service on the Louisiana
District United Pentecostal Church (UPC) board made him the longest tenured district board
member in UPC  history; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun was the kind of citizen who represents what is good
about Louisiana, a man of wisdom and faith who used his gifts and talents to change his

WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun's fellow citizens mourn the loss of this beloved
individual and share the grief of his family, friends, and congregation at his passing; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Mangun
and Bertha Birk Mangun, and four of his six siblings, Woodrow Riddle, Mildred Mangun
Shock, Gladys Mangun Starkweather, and Grace Mangun Coleman; he is survived by his
wife, Vesta Layne Gibson Mangun; his son, G. Anthony Mangun, and his wife, Mickey; his
grandchildren, Miquell Mangun Hennigan and her husband, Jeffrey, and Gentry Mangun;
two great grandchildren, Eva Mykayle Hennigan and Gibson David Hennigan; and two
sisters, Dr. Ruth Holland and Martha Spencer; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun will long continue to bring great pride and honor to the
Alexandria community and to the state of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the
death of Bishop Gerald Archie "G.A." Mangun of Alexandria, does hereby extend enduring
appreciation for his outstanding accomplishments and singular contributions during a
lifetime of dedication and service to God and his family, friends, church, and community,
and does hereby recognize that his legacy of kindness and compassion shall live forever in
the minds and hearts of all who knew and loved him.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of Bishop Gerald Archie "G.A." Mangun of Alexandria.
