HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 61
BY REPRESENTATIVE BURRELL
A RESOLUTION
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of James Washington, Sr.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of James Washington, Sr., on
April 27, 2010, at the age of sixty-six; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was born on July 6, 1943, in Benton, Louisiana, and
attended C.H. Iron High School; and
WHEREAS, at the age of eighteen, Mr. Washington moved to New York, where he
met the love of his life, Shirley Hill, and they were married on August 29, 1965; and
WHEREAS, to this union, two children were born, Sherrill and James Washington,
Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was a member of the First Freedom Baptist Church,
where he served faithfully on the usher board and worked at Waldboums Supermarket for
twenty-five years;  and 
WHEREAS, in July of 1995, Mr. Washington and his family relocated to Shreveport,
and he became a member of the Longview Baptist Church in Benton, serving faithfully on
the deacon board until his death; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was also a member of the Mystic Lodge #62, a 32nd
degree mason, a royal arch mason, a member of the Royal Order of Eastern Star, president
of the Hillside Village Association for more than eight years, and the chief volunteer for
Louisiana State Representative Roy A. Burrell; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was preceded in death by his stepfather, J.V. Black,
and two brothers, Raymond and Ray; and
WHEREAS, a great husband, a loving father, and considered by his grandchildren
to be the best poppy in the world, Mr. Washington is survived by his wife of forty-six years,
Shirley; his mother, Gennie; his children, Sherrill and James; three grandchildren, Trimell, ENROLLEDHR NO. 61

Chloe, and Colbi; his great-grandson, Trimell Isaac; two sisters, Linda and Debbie; three
brothers, Obis, Rex, and Kenneth; two uncles, Coleman and Joel; five goddaughters, Lisa,
Monique, Michelle, Macie, and Tanasi; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and
loved ones; and
WHEREAS, with the death of Mr. Washington, the state of Louisiana has lost one
of her finest citizens; and
WHEREAS, though the death of Mr. Washington has left a tremendous void in his
community, his memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all who loved him.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the
death of James Washington, Sr., does hereby record for posterity his outstanding
accomplishments and singular contributions, and does hereby recognize that the memory of
this wonderful man will continue to be a source of great pride and honor for his family,
friends, church, community, and state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of James Washington, Sr.
