HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 68
BY REPRESENTATIVE WILLMOTT
A RESOLUTION
To commend the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing for
providing exemplary nursing education for over seventy-five years.
WHEREAS, the School of Nursing of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences
Center New Orleans is the only nursing school in this state which is part of an academic
medical center; and
WHEREAS, formal nursing education began in the Louisiana State University
System in 1929; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State University System approved a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing Education (BSN Ed.) degree to be offered within the Department of Nursing
under the General Extension Division as a department of Teachers' College of LSU, Baton
Rouge in 1933; and
WHEREAS, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree to prepare nurse
generalists was approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nurse Examiners in 1955; and
WHEREAS, the Master of Nursing (MN) degree was approved by the LSU Board
of Supervisors and Louisiana Board of Regents in 1972; and
WHEREAS, the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree program was
approved by the LSU Board of Supervisors and Louisiana Board of Regents in 1973, with
the final class to earn this degree graduating in 2000; and
WHEREAS, the School of Nursing began offering continuing nursing education to
licensed Registered Nurses in 1975; and
WHEREAS, the Doctor of Nursing Science (DNS) degree was approved by the LSU
Board of Supervisors and Louisiana Board of Regents in 1985; and
WHEREAS, the School of Nursing continues to offer a Bachelor of Science in
Nursing degree to prepare nurse generalists; a Master of Nursing degree to prepare Adult
Health Clinical Nurse Specialists, Psychiatric-Community Mental Health Clinical Nurse ENROLLEDHR NO. 68

Specialists, Advanced Public Health-Community Health Nurses, Nurse Anesthetists,
Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioners, and Nurse
Administrators; a Master of Science in Nursing degree to prepare Nurse Educators; and a
Doctor of Nursing Science degree to prepare nurse researchers; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the School of Nursing is to provide local, national, and
international leadership in the education of professional nurses to function as generalists,
advanced practitioners, educators, scholars, and researchers who shape the delivery of
nursing practice and education.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Louisiana State University Health
Sciences Center School of Nursing for providing exemplary nursing education in this state
for over seventy-five years.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the chancellor of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans.
