SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 131

COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Mark B. Ward for his act of heroism and unselfish
efforts in saving the life of his brother-in-law, Mark S. Swafford, Sr.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Mark B. Ward for his act of heroism and unselfish efforts in saving the life of2
his brother-in-law, Mark. S. Swafford, Sr.3
WHEREAS, on the afternoon of February 17, 2010, Mark Swafford and his brother-4
in-law Mark Ward were cutting firewood on the family farm; and5
WHEREAS, while using a power saw on a storm-damaged tree that had six large6
limbs blown in one direction, Mark Swafford was suddenly struck in the head by two of the7
branches, throwing him over ten feet into the air before plunging to the ground; and8
WHEREAS, Mark Ward immediately rushed to the aid of his brother-in-law,9
noticing he was bleeding from his ears and nose and had no pulse; and10
WHEREAS, remaining calm, but acting quickly and using his life saving knowledge11
of CPR, Mark Ward was able to restore his brother-in-law's breathing and rushed for help;12
and13
WHEREAS, Mark Swafford was air lifted to the LSU Trauma Center after being14
assessed by the ambulance crew at the scene of the accident; and15
WHEREAS, after being examined by medical specialists at the trauma center, it was16
determined that he had a skull fracture, loss of hearing in his right ear, and a dislocated17

WHEREAS, it is with great fortune that Mark Swafford continues to recover from1
his injuries and remains ever thankful for the quick and life-saving action of his loving2
brother-in-law, Mark Ward.3
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana4
does hereby recognize Mark Ward for his knowledge and training of CPR, his ability to5
remain calm in a time of crisis, and his heroic and unselfish efforts in saving the life of his6
brother-in-law, Mark Swafford, Sr. 7
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mark8
Ward.9
