SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 131
BY SENATOR LONG 
A RESOLUTION
To commend Mark B. Ward for his act of heroism and unselfish efforts in saving the life of
his brother-in-law, Mark. S. Swafford, Sr.
WHEREAS, on the afternoon of February 17, 2010, Mark Swafford and his brother-
in-law Mark Ward were cutting firewood on the family farm; and
WHEREAS, while using a power saw on a storm-damaged tree that had six large
limbs blown in one direction, Mark Swafford was suddenly struck in the head by two of the
branches, throwing him over ten feet into the air before plunging to the ground; and
WHEREAS, Mark Ward immediately rushed to the aid of his brother-in-law,
noticing he was bleeding from his ears and nose and had no pulse; and
WHEREAS, remaining calm, but acting quickly and using his life saving knowledge
of CPR, Mark Ward was able to restore his brother-in-law's breathing and rushed for help;
and
WHEREAS, Mark Swafford was air lifted to the LSU Trauma Center after being
assessed by the ambulance crew at the scene of the accident; and
WHEREAS, after being examined by medical specialists at the trauma center, it was
determined that he had a skull fracture, loss of hearing in his right ear, and a dislocated
shoulder; and
WHEREAS, it is with great fortune that Mark Swafford continues to recover from
his injuries and remains ever thankful for the quick and life-saving action of his loving
brother-in-law, Mark Ward.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby recognize Mark Ward for his knowledge and training of CPR, his ability to
remain calm in a time of crisis, and his heroic and unselfish efforts in saving the life of his
brother-in-law, Mark Swafford, Sr.  SR NO. 131	ENROLLED

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mark
Ward.
