Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 186 BY SENATOR WALSWORTH A RESOLUTION To commend Haynesville High School football coach Alton "Red" Franklin upon his induction into the National High School Hall of Fame Class of 2010. WHEREAS, Alton "Red" Franklin played his first year of college football at the University of Alabama, but he soon returned to beloved Louisiana, where he played end for the Louisiana College Wildcats; and WHEREAS, after an 8-2 senior season, he went on to receive his bachelor of science degree in education in 1961 and began what would be an exceptional career in coaching high school football; and WHEREAS, after graduating from Louisiana College in 1961, Coach Franklin served as an assistant football coach at Marksville for two years before taking a job in Springhill for three years before he found his way and destiny took him to Haynesville High School in 1966; and WHEREAS, after a stellar thirty-five year coaching career with the Golden Tornados, Alton "Red" Franklin retired after the 2001 season as the second-winningest football coach in Louisiana history and fifteenth nationally; and WHEREAS, Coach Franklin won 367 games, losing only 76, and compiled a winning percentage of .822, while his teams won 11 state football championships during four different decades, two in the 1970s, two in the 1980s, six in the 1990s and a final championship in 2000; and WHEREAS, Coach Franklin and his team accomplished eight undefeated seasons, four of them consecutively, finished second in four other seasons, all while winning 27 district championships, participating in 31 playoff contests and shutting out opponents 191 times; and WHEREAS, Coach Franklin was named state football coach of the year six times and district coach of the year 23 times, resulting in his induction into the Louisiana High School Hall of Fame; and SR NO. 186 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, now Coach Franklin is being recognized by the National High School Hall of Fame Association for his exceptional achievements in football and for the huge difference he made in the lives of so many young athletes. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend its highest and most heartfelt commendations to Coach Alton "Red" Franklin for his outstanding contributions to the people of the state of Louisiana as he taught his players, associates and fans the true meaning of sportsmanship, hard work, and victory, on the field and off. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Alton "Red" Franklin and to Haynesville High School. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
