Commends Marlene Cox upon her selection as an alternate to represent Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress. A RESOLUTION1 To commend Marlene Cox of Evanagel Christian Academy upon her selection as an2 alternate representative of Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership3 Congress in Washington, D.C.4 WHEREAS, Marlene Cox attended the Louisiana Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY)5 Leadership Seminar, held from June 5 through June 7, 2009, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and6 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program was established in 19587 by popular actor Hugh O'Brian, following a visit to Africa where he was inspired, after8 meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, to create an organization designed to encourage the9 discussion and methods by which young people can take a leadership role in society; and10 WHEREAS, Marlene Cox was joined by one hundred fourteen other young leaders11 representing their high schools throughout Louisiana, where they discussed the core values12 of the HOBY organization, including the impact of volunteering in one's community, the13 partnership in community, and an appreciation and need for diversity in our culture; and14 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress is held every year in15 conjunction with a major United States university, and the World Leadership Congress16 (WLC) brings together young men and women from around the world for a week-long17 intensive, educational summer program; and18 SR NO. 187 SLS 10RS-5986 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, Marlene Cox was chosen as an alternate to represent Louisiana in the1 Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress being held July 25 through July 31, 2009, at2 George Washington University in Washington, D.C.; and3 WHEREAS, in September of each year, HOBY sends nomination materials to every4 accredited public and private high school in the United States under the auspices of the5 National Association of Secondary School Principals, and each high school is invited to6 select one sophomore with demonstrated leadership abilities and potential to attend regional7 spring HOBY seminars; and8 WHEREAS, after the spring seminar, one male and one female from each state are9 awarded a space at the upcoming World Leadership Congress; and10 WHEREAS, at the World Leadership Congress, students learn firsthand about other11 cultures and opinions, forming friendships, and exchanging ideas in an environment where12 they can feel comfortable in open discussions with their peers, learning to voice how they13 have formed their own views about the role of leadership in society; and14 WHEREAS, Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership believes the most important tenet in15 education is to teach young people to think for themselves, which, as a result of the more16 than three hundred thousand alumni, has influenced and inspired young people to become17 more involved in their community; and18 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress seeks to inspire high19 school students to excel as leaders, using friendship with others as a catalyst for their20 learning experience.21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana22 does hereby commend Marlene Cox upon her selection as an alternate representative of23 Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C., and does24 hereby recognize the pride and honor she has brought to the state of Louisiana through her25 achievement.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to27 Marlene Cox. 28 SR NO. 187 SLS 10RS-5986 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Suzi Montague.
