Leadership Seminar, held from June 5 through June 7, 2009, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program was established in 1958
by popular actor Hugh O'Brian, following a visit to Africa where he was inspired, after
meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, to create an organization designed to encourage the
discussion and methods by which young people can take a leadership role in society; and
WHEREAS, Marlene Cox was joined by one hundred fourteen other young leaders
representing their high schools throughout Louisiana, where they discussed the core values
of the HOBY organization, including the impact of volunteering in one's community, the
partnership in community, and an appreciation and need for diversity in our culture; and

spring HOBY seminars; and
WHEREAS, after the spring seminar, one male and one female from each state are
awarded a space at the upcoming World Leadership Congress; and
WHEREAS, at the World Leadership Congress, students learn firsthand about other

they can feel comfortable in open discussions with their peers, learning to voice how they
have formed their own views about the role of leadership in society; and
WHEREAS, Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership believes the most important tenet in
education is to teach young people to think for themselves, which, as a result of the more

school students to excel as leaders, using friendship with others as a catalyst for their
learning experience.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana

Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C., and does
hereby recognize the pride and honor she has brought to the state of Louisiana through her
