AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 24:35 and to repeal R.S. 24:35.1, relative to legislative redistricting; to provide2
for the redistricting of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana; to provide for3
effective dates; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 24:35 is hereby enacted to read as follows:6
ยง35. Membership of the Senate7
A. The Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana shall be composed of8
thirty-nine members. The state shall be divided into the following senatorial9
districts and one senator shall be chosen from each of the districts:10
(1) District 1 is composed of Precincts 9-45 and 9-45A of Orleans Parish;11

B. The precincts referenced in this Section are those precincts identified as20
Voting Districts (VTDs) in the 2010 Census Redistricting TIGER/Line Shapefiles for21
the State of Louisiana.22
C. When a precinct referenced in this Section has been subdivided by action of23
the parish governing authority on a nongeographic basis or subdivided by action of the24
parish governing authority on a geographic basis in accordance with the provisions of25
R.S. 18:532.1, the enumeration in this Section of the general precinct designation shall26
include all nongeographic and all geographic subdivisions thereof, however such27
subdivisions may be designated. The territorial limits of the districts as provided in this28
Section shall continue in effect without change regardless of any changes made to the29

Section 2.(A) The provisions of Section 1 of this Act shall be effective for the limited1
purposes of qualifying candidates for and electing members to the Senate of the Legislature2
of Louisiana at the next regularly scheduled election for members of the Senate in 2011,3
commencing on the date and at the time that the qualifying period opens for such offices.4
The effectiveness of Section 1 of this Act for such qualification and election shall not reduce5
the term of office of any member of the Senate nor change any Senate district as established6
in R.S. 24:35.1 until such provisions of law are repealed pursuant to Section 4 of this Act.7
(B) Except as provided in Subsection A of this Section, the provisions of Section 18
of this Act shall be effective at 10:00 a.m. on January 9, 2012.9
Section 3. A vacancy in the office of a member elected to serve a term of office10
commencing at 10:00 a.m. on January 9, 2012, shall be filled, as required by law from the11
district created by Section 1 of this Act from which the member was elected.12
Section 4. R.S. 24:35.1 is hereby repealed, effective at 10:00 a.m., January 9, 2012.13
Section 5. The provisions of this Section and Sections 2 and 3 of this Act shall14
become effective upon signature by the governor or, if not signed by the governor, upon15
expiration of the time for bills to become law without signature by the governor, as provided16
by Article III, Section 18 of the Constitution of Louisiana. If vetoed by the governor and17
subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on the day18
following such approval.19
