SENATE. Provides for the redistricting of the Louisiana Senate.
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 24:35 and to repeal R.S. 24:35.1, relative to legislative redistricting; to provide2
for the redistricting of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana; and to provide for3
effective dates; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 24:35 is hereby enacted to read as follows: 6
ยง35.1. Membership of the Senate7
A. The Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana shall be composed of thirty-8
nine members. The state shall be divided into the following senatorial districts and9
one senator shall be chosen from each of said districts:10
(1) District No. 1 is composed of Precinct 9-45A of Orleans Parish; Precincts11
1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 5-1, 5-2, 5-4, 5-5, 6-1, 7-1, 7-2, 8-1, 9-1, and 9-2 of12

(B) The precincts referenced in this Act are those precincts identified as14
Voting Districts (VTDs) in the 2010 Census Redistricting TIGER/Line Shapefiles15
for the State of Louisiana.16
(C) When a precinct referenced in this Act has been subdivided by action of17
the parish governing authority on a nongeographic basis or subdivided by action of18
the parish governing authority on a geographic basis in accordance with the19
provisions of R.S. 18:532.1, the enumeration in this Act of the general precinct20
designation shall include all nongeographic and all geographic subdivisions thereof,21
however such subdivisions may be designated. The territorial limits of the districts22
as provided in this Act shall continue in effect without change regardless of any23
changes made to the precincts by the parish governing authority.24
Section 2. (A) The provisions of Section 1 of this Act shall be effective for the25
limited purposes of qualifying candidates for and electing members to the Senate of the26
Legislature of Louisiana at the next regularly scheduled election for members of the Senate27
in 2012, commencing on the date and at the time that the qualifying period opens for such28
offices. The effectiveness of Section 1 of this Act for such qualification and election shall29 SB NO. 27

not reduce the term of office of any member of the Senate nor change any Senate district as1
established in R.S. 24:35.1 until such provisions of law are repealed pursuant to Section of2
this Act.3
(B) Except as provided in Subsection A of this Section, the provisions of Section 14
of this Act shall be effective at 10:00 a.m. on the second Monday in January, 2012.5
Section 3. A vacancy in the office of a member elected to serve a term of office6
commencing at 10:00 a.m. on the second Monday in January, 2012, shall be filled, as7
required by law from the district created by Section 1 of this Act from which the member8
was elected.9
Section 4. R.S. 24:35.1 is hereby repealed, effective at 10:00 a.m., January 9, 2012.10
Section 5. This Act shall become effective upon signature by the governor or, if not11
signed by the governor, upon expiration of the time for bills to become law without signature12
by the governor, as provided by Article III, Section 18 of the Constitution of Louisiana. If13
vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become14
effective on the day following such approval.15
