SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 6
BY SENATOR SMITH AND REPRESENTATIVES ARMES, HILL, DANAHAY AND
GEYMANN 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Betty J. Cunningham upon retirement as secretary-
treasurer of the Beauregard Parish Police Jury.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend Betty J. Cunningham for her twenty-nine years of dedicated public service as2
secretary-treasurer of the Beauregard Parish Police Jury and to congratulate her upon3
her retirement.4
WHEREAS, it is with great pride and admiration that the Legislature of Louisiana5
honors Betty J. Cunningham for her outstanding public service to the citizens of the parish6
of Beauregard and the southwestern portion of the state; and7
WHEREAS, since her employm ent in 1982, Betty J. Cunningham has served as a8
parish administrator, has overseen the financial management of the assets of the police jury,9
and has maintained the solvent fiscal health of parish government; and10
WHEREAS, under her watchful eye many vital public works projects have come to11
fruition including the airport's Air Flight Service Station, a new parish correctional facility,12
the Beauregard Parish Courthouse Annex, the Merryville Tourism Center, the Beauregard13
Parish Civic Center Arena, and the new Police Jury Administration Building; and14
WHEREAS, during her tenure as secretary-treasurer, Betty J. Cunningham has15
forged her years of institutional knowledge and experience and her "can do" attitude into a16
spotless record of sound fiscal responsibility; and17
WHEREAS, Betty Johnson was an academic who graduated fourth in her high school18 SCR NO. 6

class; her outgoing nature and athletic abilities were evident in her extracurricular activities1
that included girls team sports and 4-H; and2
WHEREAS, she continued her educational pursuits at Northwestern State University,3
and after graduation was employed as a merchandise control supervisor at West Corporation,4
a clerk at Beauregard Memorial Hospital, and as an adult education teacher for the5
Beauregard Parish School Board; and6
WHEREAS, Betty Johnson married her husband, Ricky Cunningham, and their union7
was blessed with four children, four grandchildren, and a host of extended family and8
friends; and9
WHEREAS, Betty J. Cunningham has fostered an interest in many social, civic, and10
community-oriented organizations with membership in the Parent-Teacher Organization,11
Dixie Softball, the Beauregard Parish Tourist Commission, the Southwest Louisiana12
Partnership; an economic development collective which encompasses the parishes of Allen,13
Cameron, Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis, and Beauregard, the Research Conservation and14
Development Board, the Kiwanis, and the Organization of Parish Administrative Officials;15
and16
WHEREAS, Betty J. Cunningham is a longtime member of the First Baptist Church17
of DeRidder; and18
WHEREAS, Betty J. Cunningham has fulfilled a commitment to twenty-nine years19
of extraordinary public and community service that exemplifies all the admirable qualities20
of a proficient, parochial government administrator.21
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby22
commend and congratulate Betty J. Cunningham on the occasion of her retirement as23
secretary-treasurer of the Beauregard Parish Police Jury, March 25, 2011, and on her lifetime24
of good works and unselfish acts of public service and does hereby wish for her every25
success in her future endeavors.26
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to27
Betty J. Cunningham.28 SCR NO. 6
