INSURANCE/AUTOMOBILE: Requires insurance companies to inform insureds to turn
in license plates for certain vehicles
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 22:885(E), relative to the cancellation of automobile insurance by the insured;2
to require that insurers inform insureds that they are required to turn in their license3
plate prior to the cancellation of liability automobile insurance; to provide an4
exception for insureds who change companies without a lapse in coverage; and to5
provide for related matters.6
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:7
Section 1. R.S. 22:885(E) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 8

E. With respect to the cancellation of liability automobile insurance, an11
insurer shall notify an insured in writing that the insured is required to surrender his12
motor vehicle license plate to the office of motor vehicles prior to the cancellation13
of his liability automobile insurance, except in instances where the insured obtains14
other automobile insurance that complies with the compulsory motor vehicle liability15

Abstract: Requires that automobile insurers inform insureds that they are required to turn
in their license plate prior to the cancellation of a policy of liability automobile
insurance.
Proposed law provides with respect to the cancellation of liability automobile insurance, an
insurer shall notify the insured in writing that the insured is required to surrender his motor
vehicle license plate to the office of motor vehicles prior to the cancellation of his liability
automobile insurance.
Proposed law provides an exception to the insurer notification requirement when an insured
obtains other automobile insurance that complies with the compulsory motor vehicle liability
security law and there is no lapse in coverage.
