SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness
Month
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.2
WHEREAS, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States;3
and4
WHEREAS, a devastating disease that can afflict anyone regardless of gender or5
ethnicity, lung cancer is the third most common cause of death in the nation, responsible for6
one in seven deaths and claiming approximately one hundred sixty thousand lives per year;7
and8
WHEREAS, lung cancer accounts for fifteen percent of all new cancer diagnoses,9
but twenty-eight percent of all cancer deaths; and10
WHEREAS, lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death11
in women in 1987, and nearly twenty-five years later, there is still no established protocol12
for early detection; and13
WHEREAS, approximately thirty-one thousand more women died of lung cancer14
than of breast cancer in 2009; and15
WHEREAS, learning the risk factors for lung cancer and other types of cancers can16
help improve the odds of early detection; and17
WHEREAS, risk factors for lung cancer include family history and smoking, and18
those who smoke are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the many smoking cessation19

WHEREAS, November 2011 is Lung Cancer Awareness Month in an effort to call1
attention to the staggering statistics, to help reduce the prevalence of lung cancer through2
education, and to raise awareness about options for those seeking to lower their risks.3
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby4
recognize November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Louisiana.5
