ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2011 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 154 BY REPRESENTATIVE HOFFMANN A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To recognize November 2011 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. WHEREAS, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States; and WHEREAS, a devastating disease that can afflict anyone regardless of gender or ethnicity, lung cancer is the third most common cause of death in the nation, responsible for one in seven deaths and claiming approximately one hundred sixty thousand lives per year; and WHEREAS, lung cancer accounts for fifteen percent of all new cancer diagnoses, but twenty-eight percent of all cancer deaths; and WHEREAS, lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in women in 1987, and nearly twenty-five years later, there is still no established protocol for early detection; and WHEREAS, approximately thirty-one thousand more women died of lung cancer than of breast cancer in 2009; and WHEREAS, learning the risk factors for lung cancer and other types of cancers can help improve the odds of early detection; and WHEREAS, risk factors for lung cancer include family history and smoking, and those who smoke are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the many smoking cessation options available; and WHEREAS, November 2011 is Lung Cancer Awareness Month in an effort to call attention to the staggering statistics, to help reduce the prevalence of lung cancer through education, and to raise awareness about options for those seeking to lower their risks.
