TEXTBOOKS/MATERI ALS.  Requires BESE to adopt an approved list of textbooks and
instructional materials for use in foreign language immersion programs. (8/15/11)
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 17:8(A)(3), relative to textbooks and other instructional materials; to provide2
for the adoption of a list of approved textbooks and other instructional materials for3
use in foreign language immersion programs and schools; and to provide for related4
matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1.  R.S. 17:8(A)(3) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7

(3)(a) The board shall adopt a list of approved textbooks and other11
instructional materials for use in foreign language immersion programs and12
schools. Such list shall be jointly developed by the Department of Education,13
the executive committee of the Council for the Development of French in14
Louisiana, and the Louisiana Consortium of Immersion Schools.15
(b) The board shall authorize city, parish, and other local public school16
boards to select and purchase textbooks and other instructional materials from17 SB NO. 33

lieu of the textbooks and other instructional materials included on any other list2
adopted by the board.3

Proposed law requires BESE to adopt a list of approved textbooks and other instructional
materials for use in foreign language immersion programs and schools. Provides that this list
be developed jointly by the Dept. of Education, the executive committee of the Council for
the Development of French in Louisiana, and the La. Consortium of Immersion Schools.
Proposed law requires BESE to authorize city, parish, and other local public school boards
to select and purchase textbooks and other instructional materials from this list for use in
their foreign language immersion programs and schools, in lieu of any other list adopted by
the board.
Effective August 15, 2011.
