BY SENATORS MOUNT, ADLEY, ALARIO, AMEDEE, APPEL, BROOME,
CHABERT, CHAISSON, CHEEK, CLAITOR, CROWE, DONAHUE,
DORSEY, ERDEY, GAUTREAUX, GUILLORY, HEITMEIER,
JACKSON, KOSTELKA, LAFLEUR, LONG, MARIONNEAUX,

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To express the sincere heartfelt condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death
of former state Senator, Guy W. Sockrider, Jr.
WHEREAS, it is with great sadness, and a sense of profound loss that the members
of the Louisiana Legislature and the citizens of Louisiana have learned of the death of
former state senator, Guy W. Sockrider, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Guy W. Sockrider, Jr., was a true southern gentleman, a man brimming
with self-confidence, a keen sense of humor, and a profound understanding of the
complexities of law and the legislative process; and
WHEREAS, he was born on November 5, 1921, in Jennings, Louisiana, to Guy
William Sockrider, Sr., and Myrtle Bell Clarke Sockrider; and
WHEREAS, Guy W. Sockrider, Jr., was immersed in politics serving the people of
southwest Louisiana for over fifty years; and
WHEREAS, he was a 1938 graduate of Jennings High School; and
WHEREAS, in 1933, at the age of twelve, Guy began a prolific work career, he
founded Industrial Construction Company in 1949, and then in 1989 IMTC, a non-union
company was formed, of which he was president and CEO, where he worked until the time
of his death; and
WHEREAS, Guy W. Sockrider, Jr., served his state and his country by voluntarily
enlisting in the United States Army's 89
th
 Infantry Division in 1942, was assigned to a
headquarters company as a commissioned officer, served as a 2
nd
 Lieutenant, 1
st
 Lieutenant,
and Captain, and was honorably discharged as the rank of Captain from the United States SCR NO. 36	ENROLLED

Army; and
WHEREAS, he was married to Ruth Grein from 1941 to 1964 and through this union
they were blessed with a daughter, Debbie Del Sockrider; he was a loving and committed
father and step-father to the two children of Jaquline Lott Sockrider, his second wife, with
whom he was married from 1965 until her death in 1993; and he was a cherished companion
to Frankie L. Trahan; and
WHEREAS, he was first elected in 1948, his service in the legislature extended from
1948 to 1964, spanning the administrations of governors Earl K. Long, Robert F. Kennon,
Jimmie H. Davis, and John J. McKeithen; and he was the last living member of the 1964
Senate at the time of his death; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sockrider tirelessly served the constituency of the Imperial
Calcasieu District of Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jefferson parishes and the
people of the state of Louisiana for sixteen consecutive years of service in the Senate; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sockrider ably performed his legislative duties serving with
standing committees for finance, and labor and industrial relations where he became
chairman and served in numerous capacities during his tenure including exceptional
leadership as Chairman of the Louisiana Legislative Council for eight years, he was
instrumental in numerous statewide projects including co-authoring legislation to elevate
McNeese from a junior college as part of LSU to a four year state university and he co-
authored legislation to establish a charity hospital in Lake Charles at that time called Charity
Hospital, now known as W.O. Moss Regional Hospital, but his proudest accomplishment in
the Senate was obtaining the financing for McNeese football stadium, and in 1964 chose not
to seek reelection to the Senate; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sockrider was articulate and knowledgeable in the policies of
finance and budgetary matters and his political philosophy embraced the give and take of
the legislative process; and
WHEREAS, Guy W. Sockrider, Jr., was a generous man blessed with an abundance
of interests and skills whose love of family and friends was of utmost importance in his life;
he performed public service proudly and willingly, he extended courtesy to all; and he leaves
a rich, unique legacy that shall live on in the hearts of all who knew him. SCR NO. 36	ENROLLED

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express its sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of statesman and former
Louisiana State Senator, Guy W. Sockrider, Jr.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to his
daughter, Debbie Sockrider.
