Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2011 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 50 BY SENATOR MOUNT A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend the Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana and to congratulate Taylor Oliver on her selection as a Champion by the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. WHEREAS, this year's telecast marks the twenty-fourth annual telethon for the Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana; and WHEREAS, its parent charity, Children's Miracle Network (CMN), has contributed more than $3.4 billion to fund medical care, research, and health outreach initiatives that have helped to improve the lives of thousands of pediatric patients since its founding in 1983; and WHEREAS, CMN collaborates with individuals, organizations, and media partners to fund medical technology upgrades and health education opportunities that benefit its member hospitals and foundations and raises funds for one hundred seventy children's hospitals across North America; and WHEREAS, Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana provided financial support to its community partners, such as CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital of Lake Charles, Louisiana, a premier pediatric health services provider; and WHEREAS, CMN was instrumental in the implementation of an advanced ear, nose, and throat navigational surgery system at St. Patrick Hospital used in the treatment of pediatric sinus patients that improves surgical outcomes and reduces recovery time; and WHEREAS, it is the mission of CMN that every child deserves the hope and healing available from a hospital in his community, care that contributes to the child's overall health and well being; and SCR NO. 50 ENROLLED Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, through CMN children of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances can receive medical treatment for every imaginable disease and injury; and WHEREAS, it was announced on May 11, 2011, that ten year old Taylor Oliver of Lake Charles, a former CMN Miracle Kid, was selected as the Champion to represent Louisiana in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champion Program; and WHEREAS, at just fifteen months old, Taylor was given a diagnosis of phase 4 neuroblastoma and spent three months in the hospital undergoing chemotherapy; and WHEREAS, despite extensive treatment, her family received the devastating news that the chemotherapy was not successful and the doctors did not expected Taylor to live to see her second birthday; and WHEREAS, even though she is considered legally blind, Taylor walks, runs, plays softball, soccer, basketball and has dreams of becoming a chef and owning a restaurant; and WHEREAS, despite the fact that she still lives with disfiguring tumors, which have threatened her life on more than one occasion, Taylor is now cancer free and will turn eleven years old September 5, 2011; and WHEREAS, CMN also provides much needed grants to other worthwhile community organizations, such as CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital Speech and Hearing Department, the Automated External Defibrillators Program with the Calcasieu Parish School Board and the Diocese of Lake Charles, St. Nicholas Center for Early Intervention, the Nurturing Parent Program at Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana, and Kid Power of Southwest Louisiana; and WHEREAS, Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana provides the much needed infrastructure for grassroots community fund-raising efforts through its corporate events, radio and television broadcasts and other local happenings that generate donations to local providers of life-saving care and crucial services for children. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana for its many contributions to local pediatric health services. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby congratulate Taylor Oliver on her selection as a Champion by the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
