A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend IBM upon its centennial anniversary celebration.2 WHEREAS, on June 16, 2011, IBM is celebrating its one hundredth anniversary, an3 event that is unmatched in the world of business and technology; and4 WHEREAS, IBM has reached this historic milestone due to the talent, passion, and5 excellence of its employees; and6 WHEREAS, while countless corporations, political groups, technologies, economic7 upheavals, and scientific disciplines have risen and disappeared throughout the decades,8 IBM has persevered, and its insights are critical to America's rising leaders who are charting9 their paths in a more global and competitive world; and10 WHEREAS, IBM's centennial celebration is focused on making the world work11 better as the company reflects on progress over the last century through three lenses:12 pioneering the science of information, changing the way the world works, and reinventing13 the modern corporation; and14 WHEREAS, IBM celebrates one hundred years of science and technology15 breakthroughs as it develops innovations to address global challenges for the next one16 hundred years; and 17 WHEREAS, IBM created technological discoveries that have transformed our lives,18 SCR NO. 90 SLS 11RS-2788 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 from the first electronic calculator and programmable computers to the chip powering the1 leading gaming consoles and the Watson computer smart enough to battle champions on the2 game show Jeopardy!; and3 WHEREAS, since its founding on June 16, 1911, IBM has evolved to anticipate the4 needs of its clients and of citizens around the world and has continued to reinvent itself as5 a modern corporation through best practices built around strong leadership, management6 training, and global growth; and7 WHEREAS, IBM has been in Louisiana since 1919, and with offices in Baton Rouge8 and New Orleans, it employs more than one hundred fifty Louisiana families; IBM9 employees in Louisiana have participated in On Demand Community, IBM's volunteer10 initiative, and have contributed more than five thousand volunteer hours through this11 program; and12 WHEREAS, in Louisiana, where it works with more than one hundred suppliers and13 business partners, IBM also works with numerous state and local agencies on many effective14 and efficient programs and policies that have helped government to be more responsive to15 taxpayers; and16 WHEREAS, IBM has made community grants of cash and equipment to Louisiana17 schools and nonprofit organizations which total more than four hundred thousand dollars,18 and IBM KidSmart Early Learning grants valued at two hundred thousand dollars have been19 awarded to Louisiana schools; and20 WHEREAS, IBM merits a special measure of commendation upon the memorable21 and historic occasion of its one hundredth anniversary.22 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby23 commend IBM upon its centennial anniversary celebration and does hereby extend enduring24 appreciation for the pride and honor it brings to the state of Louisiana and the United States25 of America.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Scott27 Howell.28 SCR NO. 90 SLS 11RS-2788 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Jerry J.
