WHEREAS, on June 16, 2011, IBM is celebrating its one hundredth anniversary, an event that is unmatched in the world of business and technology; and WHEREAS, IBM has reached this historic milestone due to the talent, passion, and excellence of its employees; and WHEREAS, while countless corporations, political groups, technologies, economic upheavals, and scientific disciplines have risen and disappeared throughout the decades, IBM has persevered, and its insights are critical to America's rising leaders who are charting their paths in a more global and competitive world; and WHEREAS, IBM's centennial celebration is focused on making the world work better as the company reflects on progress over the last century through three lenses: pioneering the science of information, changing the way the world works, and reinventing the modern corporation; and WHEREAS, IBM celebrates one hundred years of science and technology breakthroughs as it develops innovations to address global challenges for the next one hundred years; and WHEREAS, IBM created technological discoveries that have transformed our lives, from the first electronic calculator and programmable computers to the chip powering the leading gaming consoles and the Watson computer smart enough to battle champions on the game show Jeopardy!; and WHEREAS, since its founding on June 16, 1911, IBM has evolved to anticipate the needs of its clients and of citizens around the world and has continued to reinvent itself as a modern corporation through best practices built around strong leadership, management training, and global growth; and SCR NO. 90 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, IBM has been in Louisiana since 1919, and with offices in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, it employs more than one hundred fifty Louisiana families; IBM employees in Louisiana have participated in On Demand Community, IBM's volunteer initiative, and have contributed more than five thousand volunteer hours through this program; and WHEREAS, in Louisiana, where it works with more than one hundred suppliers and business partners, IBM also works with numerous state and local agencies on many effective and efficient programs and policies that have helped government to be more responsive to taxpayers; and WHEREAS, IBM has made community grants of cash and equipment to Louisiana schools and nonprofit organizations which total more than four hundred thousand dollars, and IBM KidSmart Early Learning grants valued at two hundred thousand dollars have been awarded to Louisiana schools; and WHEREAS, IBM merits a special measure of commendation upon the memorable and historic occasion of its one hundredth anniversary. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend IBM upon its centennial anniversary celebration and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the pride and honor it brings to the state of Louisiana and the United States of America.
