SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 101
BY SENATOR RISER 
A RESOLUTION
To declare Wednesday, June 15, 2011, as "Asthma Awareness Day" at the Louisiana Senate.
WHEREAS, more than twenty-four million Americans suffer from asthma, costing
the United States economy over twenty billion dollars in health care costs and lost
productivity annually; and
WHEREAS, nearly ten people die of asthma each day in the United States; and
WHEREAS, over seven million of these Americans are children under the age of
eighteen, making asthma the most common chronic illness of childhood in the United States;
and
WHEREAS, asthma is one of the leading causes of childhood hospitalizations and
long-term illnesses, accounting for over ten million school days lost each school year; and
WHEREAS, asthma accounts for over fourteen million missed work days annually
in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the American people should be informed of the significant
consequences of asthma and allergic diseases that can be prevented by the initiation of
appropriate medical care; and
WHEREAS, the National Institute of Health has issued guidelines for the diagnosis
and management of asthma which provide proven methods for prevention and treatment of
asthma; and
WHEREAS, with greater public awareness of the symptoms, consequences, and
treatments of asthma, the quality of life for both children and adults living with asthma in
the United States can be greatly improved.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby declare Wednesday, June 15, 2011, as "Asthma Awareness Day". SR NO. 101	ENROLLED

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Nancy Sander of the Allergy and Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics, Kevin Cantrelle
of AstraZeneca PLC, Keith Parker of TEVA Pharmaceutical Industries, and to Baton Rouge
allergists Drs. Prem and Vimla Menon.
