SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 30

A RESOLUTION
To commend and recognize the first Zion City Elementary School Reunion on June 11,
2011, and its theme "Raising Zion Sixty Years Later".
WHEREAS, public education has been a great service to communities across this
state, providing the children with the tools and guidance so that they may work toward a
brighter and more productive future; and
WHEREAS, nowhere is that more true than with the students who were educated at
Zion City Elementary School, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, for many years, Zion City Elementary School served as the center of
a community, providing a place of enrichment and nourishment to the children of that
district; and
WHEREAS, its long and proud history began in 1948 after the approval of a bond
that was supported by then Superintendent Clark Barro, which was designed to provide
facilities for the rapidly growing school district, and provided adequate resources so that
construction of the school began in 1949; and
WHEREAS, when the school first opened its doors the 1950-1951 school year, it had
one-hundred sixty-three students, and by the last year the school was open, it had three
hundred fifty registered students; and
WHEREAS, although the Zion City Elementary School was closed in order to serve
shifting populations and educational needs, those who attended classes in its building
remember fondly the nurturing environment, the caring teachers and administrators, and a
place that served a focal point for the community; and
WHEREAS, in an effort to celebrate the memory of their fine school, the alumni are
gathering this year for the first Zion City Elementary School Reunion. SR NO. 30 ENROLLED

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend and recognize the Zion City Elementary School Reunion and its
theme "Raising Zion Sixty Years Later", to be held on June 11, 2011.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Sybil
Jones Banks on behalf of the organizers of the Zion City Elementary School Reunion.
