SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 61
BY SENATOR LAFLEUR 
A RESOLUTION
To commend the village of Reeves on its one hundredth anniversary.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend and congratulate the village of Reeves
located in the southwestern corner of Allen parish upon the historic occasion of its one
hundredth anniversary; and
WHEREAS, farmers and mill workers from Alabama, Florida, Mississippi,
Arkansas, and the Carolinas began settling the area in the 1860s; and
WHEREAS, in 1911, the village of Reeves was officially incorporated and was a
thriving community with both saw and grist mills, a grocery store, and a post office as well
as five hotels or boarding houses, an outdoor screen for silent picture shows, an outdoor
stage for plays, and even a women's hat shop; and 
WHEREAS, it is general consensus that the village was named after Mr. Dallas H.
Reeves, Sr., who operated a grist mill on Clear Creek where the railroad crossed the creek;
and
WHEREAS, the logging industry has always been a primary industry in Allen parish;
and
WHEREAS, it became common practice for loggers to cut logs and drag them to the
edge of local creeks so that during the May floods, the logs could be floated to Reeves for
milling; and
WHEREAS, timber companies routinely hired log riders to chain the excess or
overflow logs together and using poles for balance, ride them down the Calcasieu River from
Reeves to the larger saw mill in Lake Charles; and
WHEREAS, today just over two hundred and thirty Louisianians call Reeves home
and most of the economic activity generates from rice farming, cattle, wool, and oil; and SR NO. 61	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, Reeves has become noted for its bluegrass and gospel music as well as
available hunting area, fruit and vegetable market, and the Reeves City Park; and
WHEREAS, it is the people of Reeves' sense of pride, pioneering spirit and
perseverance that will be celebrated and honored for their village's one hundredth
anniversary.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend and congratulate the village of Reeves upon the historic occasion of
its one hundredth anniversary.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
mayor of the village of Reeves.
