SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 99

A RESOLUTION
To commend Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana affiliates for improvement in
the quality of life in local communities through its endeavors in the fields of health
care and cancer awareness and to recognize June 15, 2011, as Susan G. Komen for
the Cure Day at the legislature.
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the largest source of nonprofit funds
dedicated to the fight against breast cancer awareness in the world, investing more than $1.9
billion since 1982 and pledging another $2 billion over the next decade; and
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is slated to provide $58 million in breast
cancer research grants nationwide this year, a significant investment in a down economy,
and Komen has invested more than $610 million in research funding globally during the past
thirty years; and
WHEREAS, Komen Louisiana Affiliates invested $2.2 million in local communities
last year for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, breast health education, and
outreach, and nationwide, Komen Affiliates invested a total of $130 million in their local
communities; and
WHEREAS, in Louisiana, an estimated two thousand five hundred thirty new cases
of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed among women in 2010, and six hundred twenty
women died of the disease; and
WHEREAS, among states, Louisiana has the highest rate of breast cancer mortality,
and except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among
women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in recognition of Susan G.
Komen for the Cure and to commend its efforts in the fight against breast cancer. SR NO. 99 ENROLLED

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend Susan G. Koman for the Cure for its unwavering dedication to the
fight against breast cancer and does hereby recognize Wednesday, June 15, 2011, as Capitol
Day for the Cure.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
