HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 104
BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Dr. Velma Jackson for her accomplishments upon
having a scholarship named in her honor
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend Dr. Velma Jackson for her accomplishments and contributions upon the2
occasion of having a scholarship named in her honor by the Greater Baton Rouge3
Chapter of the Meharry National Alumni Association, Incorporated.4
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson received her doctor of dental surgery degree from Meharry5
Medical College in 1972 and her bachelor of science degree in biology from Fisk University,6
both in Nashville, Tennessee; and7
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has excelled as a dentist, administrator, and instructor,8
having served as dental clinic director at Central Cities Neighborhood Health Center in New9
Orleans, director of community relations at the University of Detroit Dental Center, clinical10
instructor for Wayne State County Community College in Detroit, and director of dental11
services for the Wayne County Community Civil Service Commission in Detroit; and12
WHEREAS, since 1979, Dr. Jackson has distinguished herself in private practice,13
and at Renaissance Smiles in Baton Rouge, she focuses on cosmetic dentistry and smile14
design for a diverse population of children and adults; and 15
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson is a member of various professional organizations,16
including the Meharry Medical College Board of Trustees, Meharry National Alumni17
Association, Incorporated, of which she has served as president, American Dental18
Association, National Dental Association, Incorporated, Wolverine Dental Society,19
Louisiana Dental Association, Capital City Dental Society, Pelican State Dental Association,20

WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson also serves her community as a member of many civic1
associations, including North Boulevard Macedonia Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,2
Jack and Jill of America, of which she has served as president, and The Links, Incorporated,3
of which she has served as secretary, and she has served as a board member for the Audubon4
Girl Scouts Council and Playmakers of Baton Rouge; and5
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has led several major community initiatives, including6
serving as the founder and executive director of A Place of Refuge and developing the7
Childhood Obesity Initiative for the La Capitale Chapter of The Links, Incorporated; and 8
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has received numerous awards, including the American9
Academy of Oral Pathology Award, Oral Surgery Department Award, Prosthodontics10
Department Award, Martin Luther King Fellowship Award, United Methodist Church11
Crusade Fellowship, Louisiana Education and East Baton Rouge Education Association12
Distinguished Service Award, Civil Rights Award, and Trailblazer Award, among numerous13
others; and 14
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson merits a sincere measure of commendation for her many15
years of outstanding service to the people of the state of Louisiana.16
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby17
commend Dr. Velma Jackson upon the memorable and celebrated occasion of having a18
Meharry Medical College scholarship named in her honor, does hereby recognize and record19
for posterity her notable accomplishments and manifold contributions to her fellow citizens,20
and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor that she21
brings to the state of Louisiana.22
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted23
to Dr. Velma Jackson.24
