ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 104 BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW AND SENATOR BROOME A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend Dr. Velma Jackson for her accomplishments and contributions upon the occasion of having a scholarship named in her honor by the Greater Baton Rouge Chapter of the Meharry National Alumni Association, Incorporated. WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson received her doctor of dental surgery degree from Meharry Medical College in 1972 and her bachelor of science degree in biology from Fisk University, both in Nashville, Tennessee; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has excelled as a dentist, administrator, and instructor, having served as dental clinic director at Central Cities Neighborhood Health Center in New Orleans, director of community relations at the University of Detroit Dental Center, clinical instructor for Wayne State County Community College in Detroit, and director of dental services for the Wayne County Community Civil Service Commission in Detroit; and WHEREAS, since 1979, Dr. Jackson has distinguished herself in private practice, and at Renaissance Smiles in Baton Rouge, she focuses on cosmetic dentistry and smile design for a diverse population of children and adults; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson is a member of various professional organizations, including the Meharry Medical College Board of Trustees, Meharry National Alumni Association, Incorporated, of which she has served as president, American Dental Association, National Dental Association, Incorporated, Wolverine Dental Society, Louisiana Dental Association, Capital City Dental Society, Pelican State Dental Association, and genR8TNext Cosmetic Dental Association; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson also serves her community as a member of many civic associations, including North Boulevard Macedonia Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Jack and Jill of America, of which she has served as president, and The Links, Incorporated, ENROLLEDHCR NO. 104 Page 2 of 2 of which she has served as secretary, and she has served as a board member for the Audubon Girl Scouts Council and Playmakers of Baton Rouge; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has led several major community initiatives, including serving as the founder and executive director of A Place of Refuge and developing the Childhood Obesity Initiative for the La Capitale Chapter of The Links, Incorporated; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has received numerous awards, including the American Academy of Oral Pathology Award, Oral Surgery Department Award, Prosthodontics Department Award, Martin Luther King Fellowship Award, United Methodist Church Crusade Fellowship, Louisiana Education and East Baton Rouge Education Association Distinguished Service Award, Civil Rights Award, and Trailblazer Award, among numerous others; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson merits a sincere measure of commendation for her many years of outstanding service to the people of the state of Louisiana. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Dr. Velma Jackson upon the memorable and celebrated occasion of having a Meharry Medical College scholarship named in her honor, does hereby recognize and record for posterity her notable accomplishments and manifold contributions to her fellow citizens, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor that she brings to the state of Louisiana.
