ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 110 BY REPRESENTATIVES DOVE, HARRISON, AND WHITNEY AND SENATORS ALLAIN AND CHABERT A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To recognize October seventeenth annually as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Louisiana. WHEREAS, mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of cells lining the body's internal organs, known as the mesothelium, and that is caused by the inhalation of asbestos and asbestos particles; and WHEREAS, mesothelioma has been responsible for more than twenty thousand deaths in the United States alone, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates that between two and three thousand cases are diagnosed each year; and WHEREAS, many of the products that include asbestos are still in homes and offices throughout the country but are especially prevalent in factories, shipyards, power plants, chemical plants, and automotive and railroad structures, where men and women of Louisiana labor so that other citizens of this great state might enjoy a sturdy and efficient infrastructure and a stable and prosperous economy; and WHEREAS, unlike most types of cancer, mesothelioma can almost always be prevented by education and awareness; and WHEREAS, in memory of longtime Terrebonne Parish assessor Gene Bonvillain, the Terrebonne Parish Council has designated his birthday, October seventeenth, as Mesothelioma Day; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day to raise awareness of mesothelioma and honor those affected by the disease throughout the state. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize October seventeenth annually as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Louisiana.
