BY REPRESENTATIVES DOVE, HARRISON, AND WHITNEY AND SENATORS

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To recognize October seventeenth annually as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Louisiana.
WHEREAS, mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of
cells lining the body's internal organs, known as the mesothelium, and that is caused by the
inhalation of asbestos and asbestos particles; and
WHEREAS, mesothelioma has been responsible for more than twenty thousand
deaths in the United States alone, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates that between
two and three thousand cases are diagnosed each year; and
WHEREAS, many of the products that include asbestos are still in homes and offices
throughout the country but are especially prevalent in factories, shipyards, power plants,
chemical plants, and automotive and railroad structures, where men and women of Louisiana
labor so that other citizens of this great state might enjoy a sturdy and efficient infrastructure
and a stable and prosperous economy; and
WHEREAS, unlike most types of cancer, mesothelioma can almost always be
prevented by education and awareness; and
WHEREAS, in memory of longtime Terrebonne Parish assessor Gene Bonvillain,
the Terrebonne Parish Council has designated his birthday, October seventeenth, as
Mesothelioma Day; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day to raise awareness of
mesothelioma and honor those affected by the disease throughout the state.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
recognize October seventeenth annually as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Louisiana. ENROLLEDHCR NO. 110
