BY REPRESENTATIVE CARMODY AND SENATORS ADLEY, ALARIO, ALLAIN,
AMEDEE, APPEL, BROOME, BROWN, BUFFINGTON, CHABERT, CLAITOR,
CORTEZ, CROWE, DONAHUE, DORSEY-COLOMB, ERDEY, GALLOT,

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Michael Barry Carmody of
Shreveport, a special Marine and a great FBI agent.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death of Michael Barry Carmody on
Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the age of seventy-three; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, where he
graduated from St. John's High School; and
WHEREAS, after he graduated from his grandfather's alma mater, Spring Hill
College, in Mobile, Alabama, Mr. Carmody enlisted in the United States Marine Corps,
serving his country with valor and fortitude for three years and attaining the rank of captain;
and 
WHEREAS, following his honorable discharge from the Marines, Mr. Carmody
joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and he served with great dedication and
distinction for thirty-three years in cities throughout the nation, including Minneapolis,
Aberdeen, Kansas City, and Tampa; and
WHEREAS, upon his retirement from the FBI in 1998, Mr. Carmody had
distinguished himself as the agency's oldest special agent and one of the finest ever to serve

WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was an active member of his community and served on
the local boards of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Davis Island Yacht Club, and the
Hillsborough County Emergency Medical Council; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life, including in his battle with brain cancer, Mr.
Carmody showed himself to be a man of uncommon strength and dignity, and he was widely
respected and admired and deeply loved by his family, his friends, his colleagues at the FBI,
and his fellow Marines; and
WHEREAS, additionally, Mr. Carmody was a Eucharistic Minister at Christ the King
Catholic Church and was a Big Brother for more than fifteen years; he also served as a
member of the Tampa Yacht and Country Club and the Society of Former Special Agents
of the FBI and as a past member of the Downtown Rotary Club and the Tampa Bay
Committee on Foreign Relations; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was a devoted family man whose children and
grandchildren were his pride and joy; he is survived by his wife of forty years, Karen Welsh
Carmody; his son, Roderick Starmer Carmody and his wife, Emily; his daughter, Elizabeth
Carmody Carrere and her husband, Christopher; his grandchildren, Caroline Anne, Matthew
Hanlon, and Harrison John Carmody and Adelaide McKay, Genevieve Carmody, and John
Barry Carrere; and twenty-eight nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Roderick
Carmody and the youngest brother of his siblings who survive him, Arthur Roderick
Carmody, Jr., and his wife Mary, Josephine Gaughan Carmody, and Thomas Gaughan
Carmody and his wife Katherine; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody will always be remembered as a consummate Irish
storyteller, a lover and student of history, and a patriot with a fervent loyalty to the Marine
Corps and to the FBI; and
WHEREAS, Michael Barry Carmody, a true son of the South, merits posthumous
commendation for the indelible mark he left on his community, state, and nation and
countless individuals as one of the state's most respected, admired, and beloved citizens.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Michael Barry Carmody of
Shreveport, a special Marine and a great FBI agent, does hereby commend him ENROLLEDHCR NO. 195

posthumously for his outstanding accomplishments and singular contributions, does hereby
record for posterity his dedicated and productive service to his community, state, and nation,
and does hereby recognize that his legacy and memory shall live forever in the minds and
hearts of all who knew and loved him and will forever bring great pride and honor to the city
of Shreveport, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of Michael Barry Carmody.
