ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 39 BY REPRESENTATIVES SMITH, BADON, BARROW, WESLEY BISHOP, BROSSETT, BURRELL, COX, DIXON, FRANKLIN, GAINES, HONORE, HUNTER, GIROD JACKSON, KATRINA JACKSON, JAMES, JEFFERSON, TERRY LANDRY, NORTON, PIERRE, PRICE, THIERRY, ALFRED WILLIAMS, AND PATRICK WILLIAMS AND SENATORS BROOME, BROWN, DORSEY-COL OMB, GALLOT, GUILLORY, MORRELL, MURRAY, PETERSON, AND TARVER A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend the Iota Theta Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, upon the celebration of its fortieth anniversary and to recognize Saturday, March 31, 2012, as Delta Sigma Theta Day. WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who wanted to use their collective strengths to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need; and WHEREAS, the Delta founders' first public act was participating in the women's suffrage march in Washington, D.C., in March 1913; and WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a private, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world; and WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a sisterhood of more than two hundred thousand predominately black college educated women and currently has more than nine hundred chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Republic of Korea, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, and the Bahamas; and WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta's major programs are based upon the organization's five-point programmatic thrust of economic development, education development, physical and mental health, political awareness and involvement, and international awareness and involvement; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 39 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the Iota Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, was chartered to serve the Baton Rouge community in May 1972 by ten visionary young women and has since helped the sorority increase membership by two hundred since 1972; and WHEREAS, the Iota Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, perpetuates the sorority's tradition of public service by implementing several programs that initiate social change, encourage academic excellence, and elevate the cultural awareness of the community, such as AIDS Awareness Seminars, the Scholarship Tea for young ladies, the Delta Gent Scholarship Pageant for young men, the Annual Health and Wellness Fair, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service; and WHEREAS, the continued service of the members of the Baton Rouge Iota Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, merits sincere commendation and recognition. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the members of the Iota Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, upon the celebration of its fortieth anniversary and does hereby commend these exceptional women for their continued service and commitment to the Baton Rouge community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature hereby recognizes Saturday, March 31, 2012, as Delta Sigma Theta Day. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Raeven Pitcher, President of the Iota Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
