ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 45 BY REPRESENTATIVES ROBIDEAUX, BARRAS, STUART BISHOP, NANCY LANDRY, TERRY LANDRY, MONTOUCET, ORTEGO, AND PI ERRE A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend Lafayette upon being named the Tastiest Town in the South by Southern Living magazine. WHEREAS, when Southern Living asked its readers to vote for the South's best food destinations for the Tastiest Towns contest in 2012, more than five hundred thousand votes were cast; and WHEREAS, with 194,502 votes, Lafayette has been crowned the triumphant winner of this culinary competition, besting Louisville, New Orleans, Charleston, Charlottesville, Houston, Birmingham, Decatur, Baltimore, and Raleigh; and WHEREAS, the editors of Southern Living chose the top ten tastiest towns based upon criteria which included food as a cultural identity: the unique food or ethnicity that defines a particular Southern region; growth of a culinary-minded community: the influence that the culinary industry has on the local community and tourism; diverse cuisine at a variety of price points: accessibility to hearty, flavorful meals at any budget; local, sustainable food practices: the focus on sourcing products from local purveyors to geographically define where each meal comes from; hot chefs on the rise: the influence of the area's culinary talent in the media and pop culture; and abundance of buzz-worthy food events: the number of festivals in the area that celebrate all things food and drink; and WHEREAS, anyone who has ever dined at one of Lafayette's wide range of excellent eateries or at the kitchen table of a Lafayette local knows that this community and its extraordinary chefs and cooks exemplify all of these criteria in a distinctly delicious way; and WHEREAS, the magazine's description of "the perfect day of eating in Lafayette" includes feasting on such local specialties as smoked meat sliders, fried boudin balls, ENROLLEDHCR NO. 45 Page 2 of 2 barbeque ribs, jambalaya, duck, and white beans and sausage, among others; residents and visitors of Lafayette have enjoyed these specialties and countless other Lafayette delectables for generations; and WHEREAS, for the singular place its food occupies in the state, nation, and world, Lafayette will be the subject of a special profile in the April 2012 issue of Southern Living; and WHEREAS, Lafayette merits a special measure of commendation upon the celebration of this memorable and historic occasion. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Lafayette, Louisiana, upon being named the Tastiest Town in the South by Southern Living magazine and does hereby express sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor that the people of Lafayette and their unique culinary traditions bring to the state of Louisiana.
