HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 55

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To recognize "Le Tour d'Iberville" as part of the Lacombe Cultural Heritage Corridor.
WHEREAS, upon the celebration in 2012 of the bicentennial of the statehood of
Louisiana, it is appropriate to commemorate significant events in the history of the Pelican
State; and
WHEREAS, Louis XIV, monarch of France, commissioned Canadian hero Pierre Le
Moyne Sieur d'Iberville to explore the south coast of North America, to locate the
Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico, to explore the river and thus verify the French
claim to the center of the continent through which the great river flowed, and to take
possession of all the lands which it drained; and
WHEREAS, in fulfillment of his mission, d'Iberville and his brother, Jean-Baptiste
Sieur de Bienville, explored the Mississippi River; and
WHEREAS, the brothers learned from the American Indians of a Manchac, or back
entrance and short cut, through the Ascentia and Amite rivers and lakes Maurepas and
Pontchartrain to their ships anchored off Ship Island; and
WHEREAS, the explorer and founder of Louisiana, Pierre Le Moyne Sieur
d'Iberville, and four Canadian coureurs des bois traversed this route in two canoes, and they
made camp on Goose Point near the mouth of Bayou Lacombe on March 28, 1699; and
WHEREAS, three hundred thirteen years later, on March 28, 2012, in
commemoration of this memorable and historic event, the Lacombe Heritage Center and
Lacombe Economic Area Development are recognizing "Le Tour d' Iberville" as part of the
Lacombe Cultural Heritage Corridor.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
recognize "Le Tour d'Iberville" as part of the Lacombe Cultural Heritage Corridor and does
hereby encourage the citizens of Louisiana, as they celebrate the bicentennial of Louisiana's ENROLLEDHCR NO. 55

statehood, to commemorate the singular place that "Le Tour d'Iberville" holds in the annals
of the history of Lacombe and the state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the coordinator of the Lacombe Heritage Center.
