ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 175 BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW A RESOLUTION To urge and request the state superintendent of education or the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, as appropriate, to report electronically to each member of the legislature on the status of implementation of certain education reform measures contained in Act No. 2 of the 2012 Regular Session of the Legislature. WHEREAS, prior to the 2012 Regular Session of the Legislature, Governor Bobby Jindal traveled the state meeting with educators, policymakers, community leaders, and others to discuss his proposals for education reform; and WHEREAS, in his press release issued on October 5, 2011, Governor Jindal stated, "To all of you candidates for the Legislature and BESE, get ready...if you get elected and come to Baton Rouge to serve the people...roll up your sleeves and get to work on reforming our school system."; and WHEREAS, this statement and his travels throughout the state showed that the governor intended to involve the legislature, educators, and the community in developing and moving forward his education reform proposals; and WHEREAS, the legislature enacted those proposals early in the 2012 Regular Session of the Legislature of Louisiana and implementation of the reforms has already begun; and WHEREAS, in order for these reforms to be successful in improving Louisiana's education system, it is critical that the legislature continue its involvement, and therefore it needs to be informed of the implementation status on a continual and regular basis. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the state superintendent of education or the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, as appropriate, to report electronically every sixty days to each member of the legislature on the status of ENROLLEDHR NO. 175 Page 2 of 2 implementation of the local charter authorizers, the course provider program, and the parent petition process as contained in Act No. 2 of the 2012 Regular Session of the Legislature. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the electronic reporting as provided in this Resolution shall begin by August 31, 2012, and each report shall include but not be limited to the following information which shall be updated accordingly in each subsequent report: (1) The name and location of each local charter authorizer certified by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. (2) The name and location of and funding provided to each course provider authorized by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. (3) The number of parent petitions received by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the school systems in which the schools in question are located. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be transmitted to the state superintendent of education and the president of the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
