Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 132 BY SENATOR LONG A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to designate the area along Louisiana Highway 485 approximately two miles north and one and one- half mile south of St. Anne's Church as the Adai Indian Community in Natchitoches Parish and to erect the appropriate signs to denote the area as the Adai Indian Community. WHEREAS, the Adai people have a long history that extends far beyond the earliest European settlers when the area around present-day Robeline, Louisiana, was recorded as the Adai Indian Nation, and the Presidio de Los Adais served as what was then the capitol of the Texas territory; and WHEREAS, the Adai Indian Nation and all of the tribal families eventually settled on a six-hundred acre land grant given by the United States in 1825 to their tribal leader, Chief Ca Ba Con Ma ("One Who Speaks"), also known as Manuel Flores; and WHEREAS, this land grant was within their original homeland and bordered Laguna de Los Adaes ("Lake of the Adais") so named by the Spaniards because the Adais had lived in the area from time immemorial, and where they currently reside today; and WHEREAS, the lake was later called the Old Spanish Lake by the European settlers and ultimately the Adai Community was later referred to as Spanish Lake Community; and WHEREAS, after the Adai Indian people were recognized by the legislature as an Indian tribe in 1993 in Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 16, its members formally changed the name of the community to the Adai Indian Community; and WHEREAS, this designated land on each side of St. Anne Catholic Indian Mission Church, the third building rebuilt by the Adai Indian people as their community relocated through time, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 by the state of Louisiana and a bronze plaque commemorating its special place in history was erected by the Natchitoches Parish Tourist Commission; and WHEREAS, Louisiana Highway 485, St. Anne Indian Mission Church, and the Adai Indian Community have recently been included in the Historic District of the Cane River SCR NO. 132 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 National Heritage Park. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to designate the area approximately two miles north and one and one-half mile south of St. Anne Catholic Indian Mission Church along Louisiana Highway 485 as the Adai Indian Community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to erect the appropriate signs to denote the area as the Adai Indian Community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development and to Chief Davis of the Adai Indian Community.
