Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 142 BY SENATORS KOSTELKA, GALLOT, LONG AND WALSWORTH AND REPRESENTATIVES JEFFERSON, JAY MORRIS AND SHADOIN A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To urge and request the Louisiana State Fire Marshal to provide education and code enforcement at fraternity and sorority houses associated with colleges and universities located in the state. WHEREAS, the Legislature of Louisiana has a duty to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the people of our state, and must take all reasonable and necessary steps to preserve the lives and property of those people; and WHEREAS, the state has vested in the office of the state fire marshal, within the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, the duty to perform the functions of the state relating to the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire and of panic which may arise from fire or from the threat of fire or explosion; and WHEREAS, performance of this duty includes supervision and enforcement of safety standards and inspection; and WHEREAS, a recent tragedy has brought to the attention of the Louisiana Legislature the need for education on fire prevention and safety and code enforcement at the fraternity and sorority houses associated with colleges and universities in this state; and WHEREAS, although no lives were lost, significant property damage was caused to and injuries were sustained by private citizens and first responders in the May 19, 2012, fire at the Pi Kappa Alpha house at Louisiana Tech University; and WHEREAS, all members of the higher education community and the citizens of the cities in which Louisiana colleges and universities are located can benefit from building partnerships with the Louisiana fire marshal's office for the purpose of enhancing campus fire safety. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the Louisiana state fire marshal to provide, consistent with his duties, education on fire prevention and safety and code enforcement at fraternity and sorority houses associated with Louisiana colleges and universities.
