Designates April 21, 2012, as Global Youth Service Day in Louisiana. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To recognize and designate April 21, 2012, as Global Youth Service Day in Louisiana.2 WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that mobilizes3 millions of children and youth across the nation to improve their communities each day4 through service and service-learning; and5 WHEREAS, established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest service6 event in the world and the only day of service dedicated solely to youth engagement; and7 WHEREAS, in 2012, this special day of service is being observed for the twenty-8 fourth consecutive year in all fifty states and for the thirteenth year globally in more than one9 hundred countries; and10 WHEREAS, high quality community service and service-learning programs increase11 young people's academic engagement and achievement; workforce readiness and twenty-first12 century skills; social, emotional, and behavioral skills; and civic knowledge and13 engagement; and14 WHEREAS, community service and service-learning provide opportunities for young15 people to apply their knowledge, idealism, energy, creativity, and unique perspectives to16 improve their communities by addressing some of Louisiana's critical issues; and17 WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day provides an opportunity for young people18 SCR NO. 56 SLS 12RS-1365 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 to be active citizens; and for schools, community organizations, government agencies,1 businesses, and families to engage youth as leaders and problem-solvers; and2 WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day is an opportunity to recognize our youth for3 setting a positive example in their communities and making an impact on the most critical4 social needs of our citizens.5 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby6 recognize and designate April 21, 2012, as Global Youth Service Day in Louisiana.7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the8 lieutenant governor and to the chairman of the Louisiana Serve Commission.9 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Sherri H.
