SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 56

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To recognize and designate April 21, 2012, as Global Youth Service Day in Louisiana.
WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that mobilizes
millions of children and youth across the nation to improve their communities each day
through service and service-learning; and
WHEREAS, established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest service
event in the world and the only day of service dedicated solely to youth engagement; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, this special day of service is being observed for the twenty-
fourth consecutive year in all fifty states and for the thirteenth year globally in more than one
hundred countries; and
WHEREAS, high quality community service and service-learning programs increase
young people's academic engagement and achievement; workforce readiness and twenty-first
century skills; social, emotional, and behavioral skills; and civic knowledge and
engagement; and
WHEREAS, community service and service-learning provide opportunities for young
people to apply their knowledge, idealism, energy, creativity, and unique perspectives to
improve their communities by addressing some of Louisiana's critical issues; and
WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day provides an opportunity for young people
to be active citizens; and for schools, community organizations, government agencies,
businesses, and families to engage youth as leaders and problem-solvers; and
WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day is an opportunity to recognize our youth for
setting a positive example in their communities and making an impact on the most critical
social needs of our citizens.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
recognize and designate April 21, 2012, as Global Youth Service Day in Louisiana. SCR NO. 56	ENROLLED

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
lieutenant governor and to the chairman of the Louisiana Serve Commission.
