Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 153 BY SENATOR DORSEY-COLOMB A RESOLUTION To urge and request the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, public safety services, to study safety devices for trailers or semitrailers with a gross weight capacity of up to ten thousand pounds. WHEREAS, R.S. 32:384(D) requires every trailer and semitrailer with a load capacity of up to six thousand pounds be equipped with a safety device; and WHEREAS, the current provision of law also requires the safety devices to be securely attached to the towing vehicle while the trailer or semitrailer is in motion on a public road or highway; and WHEREAS, each safety device is required to be approved by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, office of state police, to assure such device meets all of the necessary requirements of a safety device; and WHEREAS, Senate Bill No. 406 of the 2012 Regular Session of the Legislature of Louisiana by Senator Dorsey-Colomb proposed to require all semitrailers and trailers to a loaded capacity of up to ten thousand pounds newly registered after December 31, 2012, to be equipped with a safety device approved by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, office of state police, and to require each such approved safety device to have a stamp or permanent label attached which is applicable to the size of the load capacity of the semitrailer or trailer; and WHEREAS, Senator Dorsey-Colomb concluded that it was appropriate and necessary that the subject of Senate Bill No. 406 be studied by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, public safety services, relative to safety devices for semitrailers and trailers with a loaded gross weight capacity of up to ten thousand pounds. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request that the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, public safety services, study safety devices for trailers or semitrailers with a gross weight capacity SR NO. 153 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 of up to ten thousand pounds and report its findings and recommendations in a written report to the Senate Committee on Transportation, Highways, and Public Works not later than March 1, 2013. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the deputy secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, public safety services. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
