Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 168 BY SENATOR BROOME A RESOLUTION To commend and congratulate the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum in Baton Rouge on hosting the 2012 International Planetarium Society Conference and to welcome delegates to the conference to Louisiana and Baton Rouge. WHEREAS, the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) is hosting the International Planetarium Society Conference during July 22-26, 2012; and WHEREAS, the conference, which is held biennially, will bring scientists, educators, and vendors from all over the world to Louisiana and Baton Rouge; and WHEREAS, the conference venues will include the Pennington Planetarium, LASM, the Old State Capitol, Shaw Center for the Arts, The Manship Theater, the River Center Conference Center and Hilton - Indigo - Belle hotels and will feature prestigious keynote speakers from Switzerland, Chicago, and Berkeley; and WHEREAS, the International Planetarium Society, founded in 1970, the largest planetarium society in the world, is an association of planetarium professionals throughout the world; and WHEREAS, members of the society represent schools, colleges, universities, museums and public facilities of all sizes, including small portable planetariums; and WHEREAS, host sites for prior conferences include Melbourne, Australia; Osaka, Japan; Chicago; London, England; Borlänge, Sweden; Washington, D.C.; Valencia, Spain; and Alexandria, Egypt and the 2014 conference will be held in Beijing, China; and WHEREAS, through the efforts of Planetarium Director and International Planetarium Society Past President Jon Elvert, who traveled to Toulouse, France to attend the council meeting of the International Planetarium Society and to present the bid invitation which included a detailed presentation that was assembled with the assistance of the Baton Rouge Area and Convention Visitors Bureau, the LASM and the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium was selected as the host site for the 2012 Conference over the Morrison SR NO. 168 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and the Astronef Planetarium in Saint-Etienne, France; and WHEREAS, there will be over five hundred delegates from some forty countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Finland, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, South Korea, and Syria, attending the conference, perhaps the largest such conference ever. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum in Baton Rouge on hosting the 2012 International Planetarium Society Conference. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the delegates to the 2012 International Planetarium Society Conference are hereby welcomed to Louisiana and Baton Rouge and best wishes are hereby extended for a successful conference. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Jon Elvert. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
