Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2012 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 64 BY SENATOR PERRY A RESOLUTION To express condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana on behalf of its members to the family of Cecil James Hebert. WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we have learned of the passing of Cecil James Hebert on April 17, 2012; and WHEREAS, Cecil James Hebert, born April 8, 1945, at the Kaplan Clinic was a life- long resident of Vermilion Parish who attended Maurice Elementary and graduated from Maurice High School in 1963; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hebert received a Bachelor of Science degree in May, 1967, majoring in vocational agriculture education, and earned a Master of Education degree at McNeese State University with a major in administration and supervision and a minor in health and physical education; and WHEREAS, Cecil taught biology, science and chemistry as a classroom teacher in the parishes of Lafourche and Vermilion, developed many vocational agriculture education projects as a secondary teacher, and won the Louisiana Vocational Agriculture Teacher Idea Unlimited Contest; and WHEREAS, known to other faculty members as "Mr. Fix It" because of his ability to troubleshoot and solve varied problems with equipment and machinery; and WHEREAS, following a family tragedy in 1980, Cecil became a self-employed rice, soybean and crawfish farmer operating and managing a two thousand acre farm with his father, William Hebert, and brother, Dane Hebert; and WHEREAS, due to changing economics of the area in the 1980s, Mr. Hebert became the owner and operator of a White Farm equipment dealership in Abbeville, Louisiana, was a permit agent for Cajun Exploration Company, worked as an administrative assistant for the Vermilion Parish Farm Bureau Federation where he was recognized for the Best SR NO. 64 ENROLLED Page 2 of 3 Agriculture Weekly Farm Bureau Report, and was also employed as an educational representative for Universal Technical Institute; and WHEREAS, elected as a member of the Vermilion Parish School Board from 1990- 1998 and serving as vice president of the board, Cecil was also principal of Maltrait Memorial Catholic School in Kaplan for six years, and was selected as Outstanding Principal in the Diocese of Lafayette before returning to full-time teaching in the parishes of Lafayette and Acadia until his retirement in 2009; and WHEREAS, married for forty-three years to his loving wife Gayle Ann Ledet Hebert, Mr. Hebert is also survived by two sons, Blair James Hebert and wife Michelle Lege Hebert, Trent James Hebert, and one daughter, Laury Ann Hebert Rush and husband John Watters Rush II, and six grandchildren: Avery Claire Hebert, Olivia Grace Hebert, Amelia Grace Hebert, Logan James Rush, Ethan James Hebert, and Madeline Gayle Rush; and WHEREAS, preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert Pierre Hebert and Laura Belle Bonin Hebert, Cecil is survived by four of his nine siblings, Brenda Faye Hebert Desormeaux and husband Harris, Dane Louis Hebert and wife Lisa, Jan Lee Hebert Meaders and husband David, and Bonnie Jean Hebert Brown and husband Rusty; and WHEREAS, Cecil James Hebert was engaged in many professional and religious activities which included serving as president of the Vermilion Teachers Association; a member of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association; a member of the Board of Directors for the greater Abbeville Chamber of Commerce and the education committee; president of the St. Alphonsus Church Council; trustee of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church; Deputy Knight of the Maurice Knights of Columbus; and served as Eucharistic Minister at Holy Rosary-Cabrini Catholic Church in Kaplan; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hebert throughout his life realized the importance of community involvement and service to God as taught to him by his mother and realized that the true measure of a man was not his accolades on earth but the legacy one leaves after his passing. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana offers it condolences to the family of Cecil James Hebert and acknowledges his many educational and religious contributions and activities to the citizens of his community and the people of Louisiana.
