SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 87
BY SENATOR PETERSON 
A RESOLUTION
To commend Tulane University for the work and research it does in critical areas such as
bioenvironmental, cancer and research involving women's issues, and for its
contributions to the state of Louisiana.
WHEREAS, Tulane University was founded in 1834 and is one of the most highly
regarded and selective independent research universities in the United States. The
undergraduate experience is marked by close student-faculty interaction, a variety of campus
programs, and a diverse student body representing all fifty states and more than forty
different countries; and
WHEREAS, Tulane is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, masters, doctorate,
and professional degrees; and
WHEREAS, Tulane is the largest employer in New Orleans, having five thousand
seven hundred twenty-seven employees; and
WHEREAS, Tulane, as New Orleans' largest private employer, is a major economic
driver in the region, accounting for approximately nine hundred twenty million dollars in
annual economic activity and directly and indirectly creating ten thousand six hundred jobs
throughout Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, as a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities,
Tulane takes pride in being a part of a select group of universities with pre-eminent
programs of graduate and professional education and scholarly research; and
WHEREAS, Tulane's schools and colleges offer undergraduate, graduate and
professional degrees in the liberal arts, science and engineering, architecture, business, law,
social work, medicine and public health and tropical medicine; and
WHEREAS, research in many disciplines has flourished at Tulane through the
establishment of centers such as the Newcomb College Institute, the Roger Thayer Stone
Center for Latin American Studies, the Middle American Research Institute, the
Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research, the Murphy Institute, the Tulane SR NO. 87	ENROLLED

Cancer Center, the Tulane Center for Gene Therapy, the Newcomb College Center for
Research on Women, and the Tulane Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women's
Health; and
WHEREAS, the Center for Bioenvironmental Research (CBR) promotes the use of
science in the formulation of public policy and offers expert communication about
environmental health risks and their management. To achieve these goals, the CBR is
establishing an active partnership with business, government, and interested members of the
public in order to make the CBR's research responsive to the needs of the entire community.
The CBR is particularly concerned with resolving environmental issues facing Louisiana and
the Gulf South region; and
WHEREAS, the Tulane Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women's Health
(TUXCOE) is one of eighteen designated Centers of Excellence in Women's Health in the
United States. TUXCOE is a collaborative effort between Tulane University Health Sciences
Center, Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, Xavier University and local partners. The
mission of TUXCOE is to increase awareness of women's health, make health services work
better for women, expand the knowledge base in women's health issues and increase
women's involvement in their health and healthcare; and
WHEREAS, Tulane is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of
Teaching as a university with very high research activity; and
WHEREAS, Tulane's Center for Public Service piloted the "Together for Tomorrow"
program in 2011 to engage AmeriCorps VISTA members with area schools to form
innovative partnerships with the community and elementary and secondary schools,
contributing more than ten thousand hours of service; and
WHEREAS, Tulane students have contributed thirty-nine thousand service hours to
educational programs in New Orleans; and 
WHEREAS, the Cowen Institute for Public Education's AdvanceNola program has
more than doubled the number of students taking Advanced Placement math, science, and
English courses in high schools with more than six hundred students enrolled in 2012; and
WHEREAS, thirty-three percent of African American students in Louisiana taking
Advanced Placement tests in 2012 are participants in Tulane's AdvanceNola program; and SR NO. 87	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, the Ruth U. Fertel Tulane Community Health Center has opened in the
location of the original Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and will provide care to those in New
Orleans who are underinsured or uninsured; and
WHEREAS, Tulane is at the forefront of university-led efforts to incorporate social
entrepreneurship into both academic and research programs, as well as through community
engagement; and
WHEREAS, beginning in 2012, Tulane will offer the first university-wide
undergraduate minor in social innovation and social entrepreneurship; and
WHEREAS, the new Tulane Stadium is returning to campus after a thirty-year
absence, and it will be a point of pride and economic stimulus for New Orleans and give the
Green Wave a true home field advantage; and
WHEREAS, Tulane strives to connect its values and mission to the needs of the city
of New Orleans, the state, and the nation. Community involvement is now more important
than ever as the university participates in the rebirth of New Orleans. Faculty and staff lend
their expertise to rebuilding efforts and students gain real-world experience while putting
their skills to use in the community.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend Tulane University for the work it does in many areas, including
bioenvironmental, cancer and research involving women's issues, and for its contributions
to Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Tulane University.
