HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 88

A RESOLUTION
To commend and congratulate the Northwestern State University Demons basketball team
upon advancing to its third National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
Tournament appearance and to extend best wishes to the players and coaches as they
celebrate this historic occasion and prepare for another successful season.
WHEREAS, upon the culmination of the remarkable 2012-2013 season and the
team's advancement to its third NCAA Tournament, it is appropriate that the extraordinary
achievements of the Northwestern Demons basketball team be commended and celebrated;
and
WHEREAS, in finishing with twenty-three wins and a Southland Conference
Tournament Championship, the Demons performed at the highest level of excellence
throughout the 2012-2013 season; and
WHEREAS, the Demons outstanding season saw head coach Mike McConathy
become the winningest men's college basketball coach in Louisiana history, and the Demons
record their second most wins ever in a season at Northwestern; and
WHEREAS, during the 2012-2013 season, the Demons ranked among the nation's
top one hundred teams in eleven statistical categories, including finishing second nationally
in scoring and sixth in steals per game; and
WHEREAS, the Demons earned the Southland Conference automatic bid with a
classic two-point victory over regular-season Southland Conference winner Stephen F.
Austin in Katy, Texas; and
WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 season marked the one hundredth year of Demon
basketball, which was commemorated in a centennial celebration on the campus of
Northwestern State University on March 9, 2013; and ENROLLEDHR NO. 88

WHEREAS, this season also marked the tenth twenty-win season in school history
but only the third in NSU's Division I history; and
WHEREAS, head coach Mike McConathy, assistant coaches Jeff Moore, William
Lewit, and Jacob Spielbauer have continued a winning tradition, bringing the Northwestern
basketball program to national prominence and instilling the leadership and motivation
needed to produce winners in athletics and in life; and
WHEREAS, all members of the remarkable Northwestern State University basketball
squad merit recognition and congratulations for their outstanding performance and
competitive spirit throughout the season which culminated in the Southland Conference
Tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament; and
WHEREAS, the Demons of Northwestern have the full confidence and support of
the Louisiana House of Representatives as they enjoy the victories of the renowned 2012-
2013 season and look forward to continued success and triumph in the future.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Northwestern State University Demons
basketball team upon advancing to its third National Collegiate Athletic Association
Tournament appearance, does hereby recognize and record for posterity the tremendous
pride and honor the team has brought to Northwestern State University and to the state of
Louisiana with this monumental accomplishment, and does hereby extend best wishes to the
players, coaches, and everyone involved with this premier basketball program as they
celebrate this truly historic occasion and prepare for another successful season.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to head coach Mike McConathy.
