SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 83

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend the L'Observateur for earning top honors at the Louisiana Press Association
annual convention.
WHEREAS, the one hundred thirty-third annual convention of the Louisiana Press
Association was held in Baton Rouge on Saturday, April 20, 2013; and
WHEREAS, throughout 2012, the Louisiana Press Association held the Better
Newspaper Editorial competition and the Better Newspaper Advertising competition; and
WHEREAS, the designation of Newspaper of the Year is based on the number of
points earned in the competitions with seventy-four newspapers, publications, and college
and university student newspapers having submitted three thousand five hundred sixty-one
entries; and
WHEREAS, the editorial competition included entries ranging from news story
writing to graphic design, and the advertising competition entries were judged based on
design, creativity, and effectiveness; and
WHEREAS, the L'Observateur took home thirty-two awards overall, including
Newspaper of the Year in Division 5; and thirteen first place awards, including General
Excellence; Best Front Page; Best Editorial Page; Best Single Editorial; Best Overall Sports
Coverage; Best Lifestyle Coverage; Best News Photo; Best Special Section - Editorial; Best
Staff-generated Color Ad; Best Multiple Advertiser Page; Best Classified Section or Page;
Best Online Advertising - Single Ad, Static; and Best Online Advertising - Single Ad,
Animated; and
WHEREAS, the L'Observateur earned the prestigious Newspaper of the Year award
by having the highest number of points across both the editorial and advertising divisions
of the competition, and won first place in the Editorial Sweepstakes contest; and SCR NO. 83	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, community newspapers such as the L'Observateur are vital in providing
in-depth local news coverage and a forum for residents to communicate with each other and
remain connected to their community.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend and congratulate the L'Observateur for being named Newspaper of the Year in
Division 5 by the Louisiana Press Association at its 2012 annual convention, for the thirty-
one additional awards it garnered, and for the tremendous pride the newspaper brings to the
community it serves and to the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
general manager and managing editor of the L'Observateur, David Vitrano.
