Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 84 BY SENATOR GARY SMITH AND REPRESENTATIVE MILLER A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend the St. Charles Herald-Guide for being named Newspaper of the Year in Division 4 by the Louisiana Press Association at its annual convention. WHEREAS, the one hundred thirty-third annual convention of the Louisiana Press Association was held in Baton Rouge on Saturday, April 20, 2013; and WHEREAS, throughout 2012, the Louisiana Press Association held the Better Newspaper Editorial competition and the Better Newspaper Advertising competition; and WHEREAS, the designation of Newspaper of the Year is based on the number of points earned in the competitions with seventy-four newspapers, publications, and college and university student newspapers having submitted three thousand five hundred sixty-one entries; and WHEREAS, the editorial competition included entries ranging from news story writing to graphic design, and the advertising competition entries were judged based on design, creativity, and effectiveness; and WHEREAS, the St. Charles Herald-Guide took home fourteen awards including Newspaper of the Year in Division 4, General Excellence, Best Sports Coverage, and Best Front Page, and third place in the Best News Coverage category; and WHEREAS, the St. Charles Herald-Guide editor, Jonathan Menard, captured first and second place honors in Best Sports Photo, as well as honorable mention in Best Headline and Best Sports Story; and WHEREAS, lifestyles editor Kyle Barnett finished second in Best News Story for his article on the rise of heroin in St. Charles Parish, and outdoor reporter Bruce McDonald received third place in the same category for his article about fishermen who were struck by lightning on Lake Cataouatche; and WHEREAS, the St. Charles Herald-Guide won four awards for its advertising in 2012 with graphic designer, Alissa Zeringue, winning first and second place for Best In- Paper Promotion, third place for Best Staff Generated - Black and White Ad, and honorable mention for Best Staff Generated Color Ad; and SCR NO. 84 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, community newspapers such as the St. Charles Herald-Guide are vital in providing in-depth local news coverage and a forum for residents to communicate with each other and remain connected to their community. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the St. Charles Herald-Guide for being named Newspaper of the Year in Division 4 by the Louisiana Press Association at its 2012 annual convention.
