SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 142
BY SENATOR LONG 
A RESOLUTION
To commend and congratulate Bob Marshall for receiving the 2013 Distinguished Service
Award in Sports Journalism and on being inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of
Fame.
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the citizens and Senate of Louisiana have
learned of the prestigious honor bestowed upon Bob Marshall for receiving the 2013
Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism and on his induction into the Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, the inductees are carefully chosen after extensive deliberation by an
expert panel of Louisiana Sports Writers' Association members across the state; and
WHEREAS, Bob Marshall's forty year career includes extensive work as a reporter
and columnist covering the outdoors, professional, college and Olympic sports, feature
writing, op-ed columns, and many projects specializing in environmental issues; and
WHEREAS, Bob Marshall is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who has spent much
of his career chronicaling the people, stories and issues of Louisiana's wetlands culture; and
WHEREAS, in 1997, Bob Marshall was a member of the Times Picayune's three-
man team that won a Pulitzer Prize for the series "Oceans of Trouble" which examined the
plight of the world's fisheries; and
WHEREAS, in 2004, he was elected to the Circle of Chiefs by the Outdoor Writers
Association of America, the group's highest award for contributions to conservation; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, Bob Marshall's investigations into the Corps of Engineers
missteps in building the New Orleans levees and floodwalls was part of the Times Picayune
reporting package that won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina, leading
to his being a finalist for the Investigative Editors and Reporters Award, and the Polk Award
for his on-going coverage on the causes of the disaster; and SR NO. 142	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, in 2007, he won the John H. Oakes Prize for Distinguished
Environmental Reporting from Columbia University, and the Keck Award for outstanding
science reporting from The National Academy of Sciences for a series he coauthored entitled
"Last Chance: The Fight to Save a Disappearing Coast", about Louisiana's coastal erosion
crisis; and 
WHEREAS, his environmental reporting and essays have earned him recognition
from a wide range of conservation and environmental groups, including Conservationist of
the Year awards from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation; and
WHEREAS, Bob Marshall has received numerous national and regional accolades
for journalism including top honors from the Associated Press, United Press International,
Scripps-Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards, Society of Professional
Journalists, National Association of Sportswriters and Sportscasters and the Pro Football
Writers of America, Outdoor Writers Association of America, Louisiana Sportswriters
Association, and Louisiana Outdoor Writers; and
WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,
and the overall vitality of American society depends, in great measure, upon the dedication
of great journalists like Bob Marshall who strive to investigate and report the truth.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby recognize the numerous accomplishments and extraordinary career of Bob
Marshall and commends and congratulates him for receiving the 2013 Distinguished Service
Award in Sports Journalism and on being inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Bob
Marshall.
