SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 158
BY SENATOR LONG 
A RESOLUTION
To commend Kevin Mawae on being named to the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame
Induction Class.
WHEREAS, each year Louisiana's sports writers select a limited number of athletes,
who have become figures of national renown to be regarded as the state's immortals in the
sphere of athletics and enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Class includes Ft. Polk native
and football star Kevin Mawae; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mawae began playing football in elementary school in Hanau,
Germany, while his father was stationed at Fliegerhorst Army Airfield, and later, when his
father was transferred to Ft. Polk, he played for Leesville High School, where he was an all-
state football selection and earned all-academic honors; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mawae arrived at Louisiana State University as part of the 1989
signing class, and in 1990, began his illustrious career as a four-year starting offensive
lineman; and
WHEREAS, while playing for LSU, Mr. Mawae lined up at the left tackle, left guard
and center positions, and during the 1990-1993 seasons, also played the position of long
snapper for the Tigers; and
WHEREAS, during his time at LSU, Mr. Mawae earned first-team All-Southeastern
Conference honors in 1991, and second-team All-SEC and a third team All-American honors
in 1992, and capped his college career by playing in the Blue-Gray Game and the Senior
Bowl in 1993; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mawae was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round

WHEREAS, Mr. Mawae played right guard in his first two seasons in the NFL and
moved to center in 1996, and played the next fourteen seasons in that position for the
Seahawks, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans, starting in 238 of the 241 games he played;
and
WHEREAS, during his time as a player, Mr. Mawae was regarded as one of the
NFL's top offensive linemen, being voted to eight Pro Bowls and eight All-Pro teams and
was also named to the NFL's 2000s All-Decade Team, the New York Jets All-Time Four
Decade Team; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mawae was also the recipient of the following awards: the 1998
Kyle Clifton Good Guy Award for professionalism and courtesy to teammates; the 2005
Marty Lyons Award for charity and community efforts; and the 2009 Ed Block Courage
Award for sportsmanship and courage; and in 2007, was elected to the LSU Athletic Hall
of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mawae also served as his team's NFL player representative from
1999-2001, and was on the NFL's Players Association Executive Committee from 2002-
2012, capping his stay with a four-year term as president, helping navigate a contentious
labor dispute with owners and saving the 2011 season with a long-term agreement; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Mawae truly possesses the character, skills and talents worthy
of being named to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend and congratulate Kevin Mawae on being named to the 2013 Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Kevin Mawae.
