SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 166

A RESOLUTION
To commend and congratulate Don Chaney, director of security for the Senate of the
Legislature of Louisiana upon his retirement after thirty-two years of dedicated
service to this body.
WHEREAS, at this time, the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana would like to
commend Chief Security Officer Don Chaney for his many years of meritorious service and
for his constant vigilance to assure the safety and well-being of its officers, members, and
employees; and
WHEREAS, Don Chaney began his tenure as Chief Security Officer in April 1981;
since that time he has coordinated daily Senate Security operations, he has evaluated and
trained those personnel placed under his supervision, and he has taken appropriate action
when any perceived threat or disruptive situation occurred within the premises of the
Louisiana Senate; and
WHEREAS, Don Chaney is a commissioned police officer trained at the LSU Law
Enforcement Institute, a member of the National Legislative Service and Security
Association since 1994, and head of security for all of the elected Senate presidents since
Senator Michael O'Keefe; and
WHEREAS, while still in his teens he served his country with valor and distinction
by enlistment in the United States Navy during World War II; his service included sea duty
in the Pacific Theater on three submarine tender vessels, the USS Fulton, the USS Bushnell,
and the USS Nereus; and SR NO. 166	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, with victory over Japan and the cessation of war, he participated in
Operation Crossroads, the atmospheric nuclear weapons test conducted in the summer of
1946 at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands; he completed his tour of duty and was
honorably discharged; and
WHEREAS, after his return to Louisiana, Mr. Chaney, like many other veterans,
sought gainful employment; he soon joined the ranks of the Baton Rouge Police Department
as a uniform patrol officer and witnessed thirty years of the city's law enforcement history
and growth as a patrolman and supervisor; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chaney took his duties as a law enforcement officer quite seriously;
so seriously that he "looked the part" and was a movie extra, cast as a city policeman, in the
1975 movie shot here at the state capitol building, The Deadly Tower; and 
WHEREAS, in the late 1940s it was love at first sight when he first gazed upon a
lovely store clerk at Hebert's Grocery on Scenic Highway; after a two-year courtship, Don
married Jude Laurent, in her hometown of Lakeland, Louisiana, at the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church; this year marks their sixty-first wedding anniversary on
June 30, 2013; and
WHEREAS, their union was blessed with the birth of two children, Donna and
David, with the continued blessings of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chaney offers some sage matrimonial advice that he simply states
as, "Never forget her birthday or anniversary, never tell her age, and always communicate
well with each other."; and
WHEREAS, throughout his lengthy career in Senate Security, Don Chaney maintains
an element of quiet decorum at all times even when circumstances have him intervene during
hotly contested debates or on occasions when tempers run hot and emotions run high; such
events are sometimes the operations of a democratic society in the public forum of politics;
and
WHEREAS, during his tenure at the Senate, Mr. Chaney has maintained a working
relationship with all members in law enforcement, local and state police, fire protection
services, and with the capitol complex security infrastructure, all to the benefit of those
involved in the legislative process. SR NO. 166	ENROLLED

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend Don Chaney, director of security for the Senate, upon his retirement
after thirty-two faithful years of dedicated service.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does
hereby extend best wishes to Don Chaney for a peaceful and happy retirement with success
in any future endeavors.
 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does
hereby also extend birthday greetings to Don Chaney on June 13
th
 of this year, in celebration
of his eighty-fifth birthday. 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
director of Senate security, Don Chaney.
