Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 24 BY SENATOR CROWE A RESOLUTION To commend and congratulate the State of Israel upon the occasion of the sixty-fifth anniversary of the birth of the modern State of Israel, to recognize the contributions of Israel to humankind, and to express support for the people of Israel for their right to live in freedom and to defend their land and country. WHEREAS, Israel was, originally historically granted her lands under and through the oldest recorded deed, as recorded in the Old Testament, a tome of scripture held sacred and revered by Jews and Christians alike as presenting the acts and words of God; and WHEREAS, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob promised in Genesis 12:3 to bless those that bless Israel, through the promise He made to Abraham, as follows: "And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curseth thee: and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed."; and WHEREAS, the claim and presence of the Jewish people in Israel has remained constant throughout more than 3,000 years of history; and WHEREAS, even though from time to time the land of Israel has been a colony of other nations, the only self-sustaining government which has operated on the land for the last three thousand years has been the government of Israel; and WHEREAS, Israel redeclared its independence and self-governance in 1948, with the goal of reestablishing its God-given and legally recognized land as a homeland for the Jewish people; and WHEREAS, the United States, having been the first country to recognize Israel as an independent nation and as Israel's principal ally, has enjoyed a close and mutually beneficial relationship with Israel and her people; and SR NO. 24 ENROLLED Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, the internationally recognized legal basis for the establishment of the modern State of Israel was a binding resolution under international law, which was unanimously adopted by the League of Nations in 1922 and subsequently affirmed by both houses of the United States Congress; and WHEREAS, this binding international resolution affirmed the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in the historical region of the land of Israel, including the areas of Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem; and WHEREAS, Article 80 of the United Nations charter recognized the continued validity of the rights granted to states or peoples which already existed under international instruments, and therefore the 1922 League of Nations resolution remains valid, and the Jews currently residing in the areas of Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem reside there legitimately; and WHEREAS, Israel is the greatest friend and ally of the United States in the Middle East and the values of our two nations are so intertwined that it is impossible to separate one from the other; and WHEREAS, the modern state of Israel has contributed to the rest of the world through significant and extraordinary developments in science, medicine, agriculture and technology; and WHEREAS, the State of Israel and the United States each continue to experience terrorist attacks on innocent civilians, as well as our military personnel, as a result of suicide missions and other forms of terrorism; and WHEREAS, at this time of continued uncertainty in the world, Louisiana again desires to reaffirm its desire that the United States of America remains a strong and unequivocal supporter of the State of Israel and the right of Israel to defend itself in its own country; and WHEREAS, April 16, 2013, the 5th day of Iyar, 5773 of the Hebrew calendar, marks the 65th anniversary of the founding of the modern State of Israel in the ancestral homeland of the Jewish people. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the State of Israel upon the sixty-fifth anniversary SR NO. 24 ENROLLED Page 3 of 3 of the birth of the modern State of Israel, recognize the contributions of Israel to humankind, and express support for the people of Israel for their right to live in freedom and to defend their land and country. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be transmitted to the Consul General of the State of Israel to the Southwest in Houston, Texas, and to the Embassy of Israel to the United States in Washington, D.C., for transmission to the proper authorities in the State of Israel.
