A RESOLUTION1
To recognize the week of April 22
nd
thru 29
th
, 2013, as The World Primary2
Immunodeficiency Week.3
WHEREAS, primary immunodeficiency diseases are disorders in which part of the4
body's immune system is missing or does not function properly; and5
WHEREAS, these disorders are caused by intrinsic or genetic defects in the immune6
system, many of which require chronic replacement therapy consisting of immune globulin7
administration, gamma interferon, antibiotic therapy, bone marrow or stem cell8
transplantation, or gene therapy to protect individuals from frequent life-threatening9
infections and debilitating illnesses; and10
WHEREAS, there can sometimes be a delay of more than twelve years from the11
onset of symptoms to diagnosis, resulting in permanent functional impairments; and12
WHEREAS, the World Health Organization recognizes more than 150 primary13
immunodeficiency diseases; and14
WHEREAS, there may be as many as 250,000 people living in the United States15
today with diagnosed primary immunodeficiency diseases and many require specialized16
health care and treatment; and 17
WHEREAS, primary immunodeficiency awareness week is an opportunity to18 SR NO. 44

increase awareness of these disorders and to educate the public on the diagnosis, treatment,1
and challenges faced by those who suffer from the disorder and shared by their families; and2
WHEREAS, widespread public support is needed to understand primary immune3
deficiency diseases, find cures, and provide access to all available life-saving therapies; and4
WHEREAS, the Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiency in New5
Orleans, Louisiana, and the Louisiana Primary Immunodeficiency Network deserve special6
recognition for their initiatives to improve the recognition, diagnosis, treatment, and quality7
of lives of people with primary immunodeficiency diseases.8
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana9
does hereby recognize the week of April 22

thru 29
th
, 2013, as The World Primary10
Immunodeficiency Week.11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the12
Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies at the Louisiana State University13
Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.14
