Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 77 BY SENATOR RISER A RESOLUTION To designate May 2013 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month". WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for all women in the United States and the leading overall cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 20 and 59; and WHEREAS, there are almost three million breast cancer survivors in the United States; and WHEREAS, African American women have a higher breast cancer death rate than women of any other racial or ethnic population; and WHEREAS, although rare, approximately 2,240 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and approximately 410 men will die from the disease this year; and WHEREAS, an estimated 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 64,640 new cases of in situ breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States this year; and WHEREAS, in the United States, an estimated 39,620 women will die from breast cancer this year; and WHEREAS, Louisiana has one of the highest rates for deaths from breast cancer in the United States; and WHEREAS, in Louisiana, approximately 3,630 new breast cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year and 650 women in this state are expected to die from the disease this year; and WHEREAS, the number of deaths from breast cancer are declining in the United States and this decline may be attributable to early detection and improved treatments; and WHEREAS, Mother's Day occurs in May and offers a great opportunity to remind women of the life saving importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
